  1. I dont think its a song with a name and a title but more like a drinking song to make a certain person downing a beer

  2. It’s just a drinking song.

Can Lucas, Can Lucas, can Lucas drink beer.

Exchange Lucas with any other name.

It’s kind of a “dare” thing. Like, you’d sing It while somebody was chugging a beer or something.

  3. it’s a drinking song in this context, insert anyone’s name in it. I believe it’s based on “Kalinka”.

  4. It’s basically just a chanting song, in this case for drinking..

  5. Not a real song per se, just a “drinking song”.
These songs are usually simple and short, we don’t wanna wait too long to drink our beers after all.

I guess it is more comparible to a hooligan chant than a song.

THAT said, this chant/song is loosely based on melody the 1860 Russian song Kalinka.

  6. It’s a common song we sing whenever someone has to empty their glass – usually as part of a drinking game.

“Can Lucas, can Lucas, can Lucas drink beer! Can Lucas, can Lucas, Can Lucas drink beer?”

If Lucas finishes his beer in one go, oftentimes it is followed by “Yes he could, he could, Lucas could do it” (Rhymes in Danish)

Here an authentic video I just found: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ABlSPmaqvaI](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ABlSPmaqvaI)

  7. Its not a song. Its a chant. “Can Lucas, can Lucas drink the beer”

Theres a lot of it. Drinking culture in Denmark has always been preeeeetty fkn hardcore – we’re kind of trying to do away with it – but its not unusual for people visiting from the US – to get absolutely destroyed before the Danes are even drunk. It might be a German thing that found its way up here in medieval times.

Famously we “sold our oil to Norway” because the guy doing the deal was drunk. I dont know if its true anymore, but you used to be able to get a shot of “North sea oil” at bars to mock the urban legend. Also way back before we had clean water – deals made after 2 pm were illegal. Because everyone was drunk.

  8. Just a simple drinking chant.

    They’re just singing:
“Can Lucas, can Lucas, can Lucas down a beer” repeatedly untill his beer is empty or he fails.

If he downs it succesfully it goes:
“Of course, of course, of course he can”.

As a dane I have never experienced anyone failing so I have no idea what you’re supposed to sing if that happens😅

    Great movie, though.

  9. the melodi is based on the russian kalinka song.

  10. It has nothing to do with Russia.. .. slave Ukraine 🇺🇦

  11. Like many have said it’s a drinking song. It’s kinda similar to what they do in Britain with “we like to drink with X, cause X is our mate. And when we drink with X he finishes in 8, 7 ….”.

There’s not s countdown per say in the danish version, you just drink until it’s empty or you fail.

  12. As many say you can just translate it directly. But often, people also “can x drink OUT” = empty the bottle.

That aside, great move which really makes you think afterwards.

  13. My brother was actually hired as a consultant for that movie because he ran a website with Danish drinking songs — drikkeviser.dk — at the time.

  14. seems you got your answer, just know you’re watching the best movie ever made.
