    The first test for the nationwide smartphone warning system was sent in April 2023, while the alerts have been used since then for real-life emergencies to people in particular regions of the country affected by flooding and red weather warnings.

    But *The i Paper* understands a further nationwide test for the alert – a 10-second high-pitched siren and vibration – will be sent to every UK phone this year, and the drill is likely to be repeated every two years.

    The Government’s [National Security Strategy](https://inews.co.uk/news/politics/war-british-soil-security-plan-3767894?srsltid=AfmBOopxJLpvMuCzvWCrcCQMEz227agogbMdbaLtgB99j5X3Xsv5rbc3&ico=in-line_link), launched this week, issued a stark warning that the country now had to “actively prepare for the possibility of the UK homeland coming under direct threat, potentially in a wartime scenario”.

    The document said the government will also launch “public communications to inform citizens about preparedness for risks”.

  9. Is this just trying to drum up support for increased defence spending where we think it’s ok to offer BAE systems big blank cheques until they feel rich enough to stop paying the media to scare people over non existent or highly mysterious threats?

  10. if we need siren alerts here due to say inbound missiles were are already well past the point a phone alert is going to “help”

    this has the whiff of throwing money at some consultancy to come up with some IT system that will end up being use to ping a weekly reminder not to turn your central heating on

  12. Seems like we are going to get directly involved in Russia Ukraine so the UK will become a viable target for Russia missiles. Not sure of the timescale but I guess 2 years from now boots on the ground?
