Why doesn’t london build more high rises to combat the issue?
By 2035??
Middle earners are already priced out.
yeahh we’re already being priced out. Born and bred in London but now I’ve gotta pack up next month and find somewhere cheaper to live
Rent ha doubled since the pandemic it seems
This happened after COVID, it’s done.
London is becoming a city of two extremes in the future, those lucky enough to have social housing they/their family will stay there for life, and those rich enough to buy/rent indefinitely, with a third transient class of people who rent in London for a bit, realise they can only afford a studio/1 bed flat at most and so are forced to move out …
There are changes in the property market, for sure. Lots of reductions and landlords dumping properties on the market. A flat that cost 1.1million 5 years ago is on the market for 850. Still stupid money, I know, but the agents I spoke to say it’s now a buyer’s market.
Being priced out just to rent currently. Can’t even save a penny to buy.
I’m classified as a HENRY, and I’m close to being priced out
What is the definition of inner London, it feels pretty subjective and it’s hardly central London
“By 2035” is a funny way to say “already”.
And then is makes all the towns around outer London more expensive and they don’t even offer any of the quality of life London has. just annoying
Heck I’m not what is classified as a “middle earner” and I’m already priced out.
Main issue being people who’s job it is to police the issue are property owners themselves 😭
“Middle earners” in this case meaning anyone below the 95th percentile or so.
Already completed it mate. 👉🏾
Already at that point
£90K household income being classed as middle income shows how bad wages have become in this country. A couple on £45k each doesn’t really go far these days, and I would love to be on £45k right now
Does anyone know anything about the charity that commissioned this, Dolphin Living? I’ve not heard of them–website says around since 2005, but I can’t find much information about them in an admittedly pretty quick web search.
I’m of the controversial opinion that social housing in Zone 1 should be for London born natives only. I also think young professionals who do not meet a level of pay that can pay for sound accommodation, working a full time job below a salary should have first dibs on social housing.
‘According to Dolphin Living, to solve this affordability crisis, tens of thousands of affordable new homes for sub-market rent, must be made available for median earners with a household income of between £45,000 and £90,000 who are not eligible for social housing yet are priced out of the housing market.’
Who knew…
Meanwhile the governments response to this is to increase taxes on middle earners and stamp duty
Our landlord put our rent up 500% in Hackney and we now are moving out of London despite having lived here our whole life and both having decent jobs.
Regardless of whether we ‘could’ technically afford to stay somewhere else in London the idea of being skint for the rest of our lives, just in order to pay rent/mortgage on somewhere that was a sh*thole 10-20 years ago is not something we want. We are both mid 40s so its a last chance for a mortgage realistically.
What’s funny is the people in Sussex (where we will move to) seem to hate DFLs (‘down from Londoners’) and openly blame us for all their housing issues, but those of us in London are expected to just accept it?!
These threads always make me chuckle. Like yeah? That’s how inflation works. It’s designed to fuck the worker. Why do you think the rich buy so many assets.
Working 40 hours a week for something that is supposedly valuable because the government said it is while the rich are stocking up on houses.
And they’re “kindly” spreading the disease to my town, now that they’ve all remembered en masse that the seaside is a thing and a suitable amount of time has passed since the last Kiss Me Quick hat was sold for it to be safely middle-class again.
How much do you need to be a middle earner?
Honestly it’s very true. My partner and I have been living in a 1 bed flat in zone 2 the last 3.5 years. We tried upsizing but everywhere is so expensive.
We’ve ended up moving out to a small town outside Milton Keynes and bought a 3 bed house as the mortgage was cheaper than renting in London.
We still have to commute a few times a week for work but it’s still way cheaper than upsizing in London.
I’m so so grateful for my family having access to social housing. The private housing market is an absolute joke. It’s complete unsustainable.
