on his way to the summit in the Netherlands Trump dropped a verbal bomb when interviewed by journalists are you still committed to article 5 of NATO uh depends on your definition there’s numerous definitions of article 5 you know that right but I’m committed to uh being their friends you know I’ve become friends with many of those leaders a comment that’s certain to trigger leaders of the 32 member organization who were met by King Villim Alexander in the Hague article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty considers that an attack against one ally is an attack against all this principle is at the heart of the alliance committing its members to protecting each other in the case of conflict however the US president previously threatened to no longer protect those who don’t contribute enough of their budget to their own defense in the days leading up to the meeting most member states bowed down to this pressure and agreed to allocate 5% of their GDP but Slovakia has yet to give its own answer while Spain has refused to hike up spending i was the one that said that’s what they should be paying is you know uh no I I should do something and and they’re having a problem with Spain they’re always a problem with Spain cuz Spain’s not agreeing which is very unfair to the rest of them overall countries hope the increase will win over the US president’s support but leaders have insisted it’s also necessary amidst the current climate the world is a dangerous place we are confronted with profound security threats that span from the Euro Atlantic to the Middle East to the Indo Pacific but I’m absolutely confident that together with the leaders in this room tonight we will emerge stronger and make our countries and the world safer the United States currently cover 2/3 of the alliance’s budget and last week Trump argued that the US may not need to abide by the same 5% spending pledge

While Trump’s threats to withdraw from the agreement have capitulated some nations to his demands to raise member states’ financial contributions to 5 percent of their GDP, Slovakia and Spain remain resistant.

  17. The European Union still can’t unite even when bullied by Trump and threatened by Russia because it’s not a real union, just 27 countries pretending to act as one. There’s no single real leader, no agreement on what the real threat even is.

  19. The only time that Article V was invoked was for the US after the 9/11 attack, including Allies going to Afghanistan with the US.

  21. Just remember, Americans, the only nation to trigger Article 5 to ask for AND RECEIVE support from its NATO allies is the USA. Remember too how many lives were lost by those allies in the US’s cause.

    Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty (NATO) is the cornerstone of the alliance, stating that an armed attack against one or more of its members shall be considered an attack against them all. This means that if one NATO country is attacked, all other members are obligated to come to its defense. While it doesn't mandate a specific response, it requires each member to take "such action as it deems necessary, including the use of armed force" to restore and maintain the security of the North Atlantic area.

  39. The US should downgrade its membership to Major Non-NATO ally and reduce its military presence. Remaining forces should be concentrated in Poland, the Baltics, Greece, and Cyprus.

  41. 10 years to be at 5% that's the current concept, kick the can NATO or Spain, while all of your societies cater to every citizen as socialists do, because you don't pay for defense as the US has been that fall back position for years. Now it's getting tense as Russia can see that, and the Baltic states should be very worried, as Spain appears to suggest being reactionary.

  42. LOL. He's probably the one they all want defense from, and they have already come to an agreement to work together without him. I wonder if they are hoping he walks away. He will start a new war before the others do. The rest know there is already one too many wars going on.
