They are Leylandii (Leyland Cypress), see it used in hedges a lot in Ireland.
Couldn’t afford actual Palm since the palm oil boom
The palm leaves were laid down on the ground for Jesus to walk on or something I think there are palm leaves in the incense used in mass for palm Sunday, iirc
Funny thing is some actual palm species can and do survive in Ireland, though mostly only in sunny spots in tended gardens – they do generally need to be looked after a bit through our winters e.g. [Phoenix Canariensis](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phoenix_canariensis)
And not to be confused with the [Cordylines](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cordyline_australis) very popular here to the amusing confusion of some tourists – they aren’t true palms and are used to colder weather, originally imports from New Zealand which has a somewhat similar climate.
Wait until you realise Jesus *didn’t* actually look like a ripped 90s garage band member.
In the States we get actual Palm fronds. When I was in Italy they gave out Olive branches.
Aren’t they supposed to be yew branches in Ireland?
That’s why every church and graveyard has yew trees.
Wrong climate for enough palm trees.
We always had leaves which were or at least looked like palm leaves in my local churches, never seen it substituted so poorly.
You kinda made me proud that I realised that when I was like 7 ngl
