Hey all,
I just had a totally unexpected but amazing dinner at Dishoom in Edinburgh. I hadn’t planned on it — just walked in on a whim — and it ended up being one of the best meals I’ve had in the UK. Afterwards, I looked it up on Google and was shocked: it has 4.8 stars with over 16,000 reviews!
Then I checked their London Shoreditch location… and holy crap — it has 36,935 reviews and still holds a 4.8 rating (screenshot attached). That’s absolutely insane.
So I’m wondering:
Is Dishoom Shoreditch one of the most reviewed and highest-rated restaurants in all of London?
Are there any restaurants in London with more reviews than that and still a rating of 4.5 or above?
For me, any place with over 5,000 reviews is usually a pretty safe bet — and when it hits 10,000+, I start thinking, “Okay, I have to eat here.”
Dishoom feels like a level beyond that — like a cultural phenomenon.

It’s a cool dining experience and the food is tasty. Hell they even deliver.
People tend to hate on Dishoom in this sub – it’s always been a good experience for me. Reasonably priced, good service, tasty food and the places are beautiful!
Dishoom is one of the most consistently delicious restaurants I’ve ever dined at. Their delivery is lovely too. Anyone who says otherwise is a pseudointellectual contrarian
Do you know that they even launched their own hotel chain?
The place gets a lot of hate for absolutely no reason. Fine if you don’t like it, but I’ve been there tons of times, and I’ve had an excellent experience every single time. Great service, great food, great drinks, and it’s never felt unreasonably priced. The claims of it being ‘inauthentic’ are just snobbish. It’s not really trying to be ‘authentic’ Indian food that you would find in Mumbai cafes. It’s a fusion, it has adapted recipes, but they’re no less complex. If you’ve ever tried making some of the recipes from their cookbook, they can be insanely involved and time consuming.
Marketing ? The em dashes make it look like AI lol
Dishoom is good. The problem comes when people compare it to a good neighbourhood Indian restaurant, which it’s not supposed to be.
Dishoom is supposed to be a fantasy. Every restaurant has its own unique fictional backstory ffs. Yes, of course, it’s not as authentic as your favourite family joint in Tooting or Harrow or whatever, but it’s not trying to be so that’s a pointless comparison.
It’s good, but you’ll find so many good indian places in London, and they may not have thousands of reviews! (thinking Southall / Wembley / Upton Park – definitely *not* Brick Lane)
Love it. The Battersea one is my favourite thanks to the batty chicken which is the best thing ever.

As a Indian, I can say that place is amazing!! It’s as authentic to a Indian parsi joint as it can be while serving a majority uk taste.
I especially love their pav bhaji which is super close to home, jackfruit biryani and black dal!!!
No place can capture a true indian taste because it doesn’t exist. It’s a flavour pallet that changed city to city region to region. As long as you love the food it’s good enough
It’s very polarising, people either love it or hate it. Is it the best and most authentic Indian food you’ll ever eat? Probably not, but it’s delicious and hits the spot every time.
Considering how much they’ve expanded in the last few years, I’ve found the quality to remain high and consistent. Always happy to eat there when I have the chance.
The Shoreditch one is quite the dive. It was an instant his the moment it opened its doors and it has only expanded.
To be honest, when I moved to Edinburgh in 2019 it blew my mind that there was a Dishoom there! I thought it was only around Shoreditch/Covent Garden/Kings X.
That’s years ago now though. The restaurant is really well established now.
Love Dishoom, and for me personally I always had a hard time finding good Indian food. That changed when I came to London.
Indifferent to it. I think you can book some locations now but a lot of the hate comes from the clownish behaviour of a lot of people queuing for hours for decent enough passable food for because they didn’t do reservations. Certainly annoying if one was in your neighborhood and your preference is to not walk in the street.
The language in this post feels really odd, incredibly over the top for what is just a restaurant. What makes this place “crazy”? or “insane”? And what is so shocking about a good restaurant having good reviews? This is a really weird post.
It’s a good restaurant which is also popular, and things to get hate from the contrarians when something becomes too popular.
There is only one I know of which is Tonnarello in Rome, 4.7/5 with 88k reviews.
Went there as many people had recommended it and it did indeed live up to the hype. There is always a queue but they have quite a few branches serving the same plaza so you will get seated in like 20 minutes (or at least that was the case when I went 2 years ago!)
I never had enough time to queue for it.
It’s more expensive than your average takeaway, but it’s quite good food. Wish the daal was cheaper.

The Royal Nawaab in Perivale comes close-ish at 4.6 from 39,600+
https://maps.app.goo.gl/Nwx77tJAG2stS948A but I think its real hard to match your 4.8 with that many reviews
We’re off to Manchester for a few days next week and booked into Nawaab at the Stockport Pyramid (such a weird building).
Edit: And Vasanthas Vilas, a veggie place in East Ham has 4.8, but their 16,000 reviews fall short of Dishoom

Are we doing the whole Angus Steakhouse thing again?
Black Dahl with garlic naan!!! The Covent Garden location is really good too.
Is OP implying 4.8 is good or bad?
“Crazier than this” in what respect?
4.8 out of 5 seems high, no??
I lived in India for several years, have tried Dishoom multiple times and have been consistently disappointed. It doesn’t live up to the hype for me.
