which even the Mail feel the need to point out in one of their articles today:

    >[DM: Fury over Boris Johnson’s £120m deal to send Channel migrants to Rwanda: Backlash over country’s record of ‘genocide, killing and torture’ as it’s claimed asylum seekers will get a ‘ONE-WAY ticket’ in plan (and will cost more than putting them in the RITZ)](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-10717909/Boris-Johnson-braces-battle-120m-deal-send-Channel-migrants-4-000-miles-Rwanda.html)

    and:

They are in a rush to try push through the [Nationality and Borders Bill](https://bills.parliament.uk/bills/3023) before the end of the present parliamentary session.

    >Mon 4 Apr 2022: [Priti Patel’s immigration bill suffers multiple defeats in Lords](https://www.theguardian.com/world/2022/apr/04/priti-patels-immigration-bill-suffers-at-least-10-defeats-in-lords)

I was surprised at to hear of this announcement going ahead today for the hurdle they still need to get past. Distraction from partygate is what he wants though.

  2. Disgusting speech.

Pretending refugees aren’t refugees because they’re young or male, like it’s somehow a mystery why people most willing to take risks to cross the channel might be more likely to be male or young.

Pretending the aim is to reduce drownings, and to undermine the traffickers, when both can be ended overnight at far lower cost by simply providing safe routes to claim asylum, and/or safe passage across the channel.

Lying about the UK doing more than any other comparable nation to help refugees.

Parroting the far-right canard that the fact that France is safe has any relevance.

Pretending that somehow an undeserving asylum claimant has some effect on the claims of deserving ones.

All this to justify dumping refugees on a country with a terrible history of genocide, abuse of ethnic minorities, rampant corruption (maybe that’s why he likes it), and incredible poverty.

I guess when you’re Lame Duck Johnson and you reach the bottom of the barrel of integrity and decency and competence the only thing to do is keep digging.

Edit: Horrible echoes of the [Madagascar Plan](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Madagascar_Plan), which involved shipping Jews to Madagascar in the 1930s (hat tip to /u/camkaz).

  3. I’ve just realised – this is like when [Australia opened up a detainment centre in Papua New Guinea.](https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2021/oct/06/australia-to-end-offshore-processing-in-papua-new-guinea)

“The Australian-run detention centre on PNG’s Manus Island was found to be illegal and ordered shut by the PNG supreme court in 2016 and Australia forced to pay $70m in compensation to those unlawfully detained”

This could end badly for Boris. Again.

  4. Gives me the same vibes as Nazi Germany’s 1940 plan to move Jews to Madagascar.

EDIT: Not saying the British treatment of asylum seekers is on Parr with Nazi treatment of Jews.

While there are clear differences, the similarity I point out is the ridiculous absurdity of moving unwanted people to the other side of the world, whether one plan is more deranged than the other.

TIL – don’t leave anything up for interpretation on the internet

  5. Shameful in many ways.

Shameful that it actually crossed their minds that this is an acceptable way to behave.

Shameful that there will actually be people that support this.

  6. I never want to hear anyone on the left say “they’re both as bad as each other” ever again after this.

  7. This will never come to fruition. It’s no coincidence this is announced on the first day of purdah for the local elections. This is a racist sabre-rattling in the opening moments of the local election culture battle.

All the usual types are already on message after their whatsapp notifications went off.

It’ll be quietly shelved after the elections are over.

  8. This is doomed to failure. We can’t even deport rapists and murderers at the end of their sentences because of legal battles, this doesn’t stand a chance.

Any migrant will now make sure they arrive as part of a family unit.

Anyway, can we talk about Boris resigning?

  9. Great news. Mean people will not die in boats coming over channel.

Worked in aus stop anyone trying.

  10. I actually think this policy makes sense, it makes it a clear deterrence of entering the UK illegally.

The policy is clear, don’t try and skip the queue, use the official systems in place. The only people this policy effects negatively are people smugglers.

  11. …and the racist Tory voters bark and clap like seals. Not that this was timed to coincide with him being officially identified as a criminal by the MET now.

  12. For everyone arguing about Rwanda like the specific country matters, it doesn’t matter. The outrage is that we’re shipping off desperate people like cattle to a nation half the world away and pretending that it’s a solution, rather than actually doing our fair share to remediate the damage we’ve profiteered off for centuries

  13. Literally only yesterday he got fined for commiting a crime and now he’s telling us to endorse what I perceive as a crime against another human being. No fucking way.

  14. I’ve never understood why people are against this.. Why would you not want the authorities to know who’s entering your country? Do you like the chance that there’s criminals, rapists, etc coming in?

  15. I take it this is a pie in the sky distraction tactic (like the Scotland – NI Bridge) to change the discussion from how Johnston lied to parliament and has be found to have broken the law.

  16. I don’t understand how average Redditor here complains about the cost of life and at the same time endorses illegal immigration.

I think if immigration laws are too strict – those laws should be amended, not ignored. Otherwise only the worst and the most antisocial people are getting into the country, because those who comply with the law won’t be admitted and those prepared to circumvent it – are cheered and welcome.

  17. Judging by some of the comments I’ve seen on Twitter by extreme right wingers, there are a lot of people who, if the government announced every asylum seeker would be shot on sight, would complain that they weren’t going to torture them first. Makes me ashamed to be part of this country.

  18. Is this not the most blantant dead cat strategy ever? It is so obviously meant to inflame and distract anyone with political views anywhere other than the hard right.

  19. Oh, look all the headlines have moved over to the next news story designed to appease their core voters.

These people have no shame and must be voted out at the next election otherwise all of us normal folk will be applying for asylum in another country before long.

  20. There are 250-300,000 on housing and re-housing lists just in London. Families of 4 living in one bed flats on my estate, countless disabled unable to get out because the disability happened imn the last decade. So much abjust, suicidal misery.

Parents have literally set themselves on fire – immolated – in benefit offices.

    Solve that.

  21. I dont understand what that the people in this thread think we should do we these migrants. Where do they stay? we haven’t got homes for them ffs.

  22. Why is saying the country can’t sustain mass immigration and is bad for the economy considered right wing? Almost all countries you cannot just walk across the border and stay due to more extreme or similar immigration laws.

  23. Most are economic migrants. If they were true refugees then they wouldn’t be passing through multiple western European countries to get to ‘safety’ in Britain. They launch across the Channel from France for fucks sake. A G7 nation. Not to mention Germany and BENELUX nearby. Refugees don’t get to pick and choose the country to settle.
