EU-style devices to stop drivers speeding may be fitted in new cars

Speed limiters could be fitted to all new cars under government plans to fall in line with a controversial European Union ruling.

Ministers are set to announce consultation on a range of vehicle safety measures that reduce engine power or set off alarms if drivers exceed the speed limit.

The measures would be introduced for safety reasons but are likely to be backed by environmental campaigners pushing for lower speeds to reduce emissions.

They are the latest sign of a growing crackdown on speeding, with police forces increasingly enforcing 60mph speed limits on long stretches of new smart motorways.

On Friday night, Tory MPs suggested the “Big Brother in your cockpit” proposals were further evidence of an “anti-driver campaign” that sounded “very unconservative”.

Craig Mackinlay, the Conservative chairman of the Fair Fuel UK Motorists and Hauliers all-party parliamentary group, said: “This will completely destroy the luxury car market, and I think there are so many aspects of the anti-driver campaign now that are coming to the fore.

“This is just more Big Brother in your cockpit. We’ll see more of this if we go up the route of road pricing. I don’t think people have thought of the freedom aspects of all of this. It just sounds very unconservative.”

The measures include so-called intelligent speed assistance (ISA), which relies on a combination of GPS tracking and cameras on the vehicle to assess the local limit.

Those Brexit benefits.. oh wait. 😂

  3. Some people really wouldn’t be able to cope with this. The types who always go over the limit and think people driving the limit are “holding up traffic” etc.

  4. There are warnings fitted to certain cars. They sound out if you go over the speed limit. A co worker years ago turned it on whilst we were visiting site. I didn’t know how to turn them off! (Well he was an absolute cunt and was about to retire anyway).

  5. It won’t be necessary. Most cars know how fast they’re going and have trip computers. Soon enough they’ll be able to download this data after a crash or accident, and if you were speeding your insurance company will screw you.

  6. Any device designed to impose limits on a cars power output is a safety hazard; for every crash caused by excess speed, I can guarantee that there are several that are avoided due to being able to get out of the way quickly enough.

Yeah, they should know that lower speed alone will generally decrease emissions, due to increasing travel time. The issue is with the efficient use of available power, which is a transmission concern – you want functional ‘cruise’ gears at as close to idle RPM as possible.

Not surprised by this in the slightest; all the extra fines from people who get caught out by the frankly dangerous smart motorway system are probably helping to fill the hole in their budget the Tories put there.

Thanks to Brexit and the Tories, we’ve lost the ability to have any say over the EU regulations we have to follow. They’re responsible for the situation, and once again here are trying to protect their election chances by playing what’s fast become their preferred propaganda phrase of 2022 – ‘very unconservative’.

    Tories are apparently ‘very unconservative’…

  7. That’s good news and if you’re not an idiot you can see it as good news. It is also hilarious news because we gave up our seat to have a say in such things at a wider scale. This happening upsets two insufferable groups, Brexiteers and Gary Boys as well as those who never grew up and got out of the habits.
