Italy’s looming fault line: Conte warns against Europe’s ‘race to rearm’

  1. Reactionary. Everyone is closing the doors after the horse has bolted on Russia, and Conte is reacting to that reaction by pearl-clutching over not getting to spend that money internally.

Amount of current politicians with a clear post-invasion vision of Europe: Zero.

  2. There’s a disturbing similarity in the rhetoric of many European green parties regarding this issue. In Germany they’ve made nuclear go off the table leading to more gas imports from Russia and generally have a very anti-NATO stance.

  3. >I invite our [German] friends to evaluate together a process of coordinated European investment, which offers the possibility of saving on national military investments

If a French or a British politician said this, the media and this sub would blow its load over it. If an Italian politician says this, they are a Russian puppet.

Further evidence that many only want a “European defence” as a strong-arm competition where a few national champions get to trump any competitors and secure guaranteed lucrative contracts which other countries have to oblige to, instead of an actual collaborative effort tailored to the specific necessities of 27 different countries in order to improve together.

  4. He’s wrong but there is some questions to be had now when it comes to the EU’s economic position

EZ inflation at 7.5% yet interest rate still at 0% while the gas isn’t even cut off yet

  5. agreed. whatever spending should go to military tech rather than the armies per se. it might help europe stop being so woefully behind in tech

as to the russian threat, apparently they are not hard to beat provided that europeans learn to actually honor the common defense treaty and help each other
