The energy sector of the Republic of Moldova is going through a deep digitalization process. The Ministry of Energy has presented a concept for the next five years for the implementation of advanced and interoperable digital solutions in line with the objectives of European integration and energy resilience. State Secretary Cristina Pereteatcu noted that the digital transformation of the energy sector is a strategic priority for the Republic of Moldova, in the context of European integration and contemporary challenges related to energy security, operational efficiency and resilience of critical infrastructures, IPN reports.

The Concept of the Energy Sector Digital Transformation Programme for 2025-2030 sets the strategic directions for the modernization and digitalization of the national energy system and defines the medium-term public policies in this key area.

The energy sector is currently facing an underdeveloped, vulnerable, fragmented and outdated digital infrastructure, which limits its ability to modernize and adapt to today’s requirements. According to the latest surveys, 80.7% of households have access to the internet and less than 17% of SMEs have successfully integrated digital technologies into their business. These data reflect a major digital divide in the national economy, including in the energy sector, said Cristina Pereteatcu.

The Ministry of Energy is committed to reducing risks and strengthening the technical capabilities of the energy networks. In this process, digitization becomes the central tool for real-time monitoring, optimizing operational flows and ensuring an efficient response, contributing to a more flexible and predictable energy system.

According to Radu Cornea, UNDP consultant, the energy sector, which is a critical component of the national infrastructure, requires urgent and coordinated measures to strengthen cybersecurity by implementing advanced systems for monitoring, detection, prevention and rapid response to incidents.

“Providers of essential energy services are obliged to adopt clear governance measures, continuous risk assessment and prompt incident reporting. The program creates the necessary framework for effective and compliant implementation of these European standards”, said Radu Cornea.

The Ministry of Energy, in partnership with UNDP Moldova and with funding from the Government of Italy, launched a smart metering pilot program in 2023, which is already contributing to the consolidation of a more efficient and resilient energy infrastructure. This initiative serves as a foundation for scaling up digital systems across the entire energy chain.
