Fusie Boortmeerbeek Mechelen

  1. Just want to have your toughts about this situation.
Mechelen and BMB could posdibly fuse. Which is strange because we Bmb are Vlaams Brabant and Mechelen is Antwerpen. And they havent really worked together on anything in the past.
Mechelen seems to be interested because their debts would be cancelled by Vlareg (I think). I do not see any advantages for the people of BMB. We’ll probably have to pay more taxes for having almost nothing in return.
Apparently our mayor would receive a schepen function in Mechelen.
So I get the feeling we are getting sold out for political gain.

  2. Never thought I’d see the day my local politics would make it to reddit. 🙂 I have yet to encounter any Boortmeerbeekenaar that is in favour of fusing with Mechelen. Not because we’re opposed to any fusion (Boortmeerbeek already is the fusion of 3 towns), but because fusing with Mechelen would see our, relatively, financially healthy town with low communal tax become the umpteenth district of Mechelen that can pay up all the bills, and probably see no representation whatsoever. Mechelen has a debt per citizen of over 3000 euros, Boortmeerbeek less than 500. And our train station gets the job done just as well.

A fusion with Haacht, Kampenhout and/or Keerbergen would make a whole lot more sense, and would actually be supported by the people who live there. Though, again, this would not be in favour of Boortmeerbeeks finances – but atleast the imbalance wouldn’t be as great.

Then again, both Mechelen and Boortmeerbeek have OVLD mayors, so who cares what the people think? Karin Derua of Boortmeerbeek has no doubt already been promised a much better-paid position as alderman in Mechelen.

  3. I read an article on GVA. Even politicians from Mechelen are against it and say it is only to reduce Mechelen’s debt.

Sounds like it’s all about the money.

Do Mechelen and Boortmeerbeek work together on anything?

  4. Lol, they looked at the maths in Mechelen and said “we need a commune of 13 000 inhabitants to get to a 100 000” … and this was the closest one?

  5. I read it yesterday and when I saw the map of the 2 together I thought: that’s a penis.

No, I don’t live there anymore so don’t care that much, but Haacht would be more logical.
These fusions everywhere will require some administrative changes. Town hall will be just to far away for some. Or are they building a new one in the center with the money they get from the VO.

  6. I really don’t get why any commune would want to join a city. As if any city will send money to a backwater village instead of pouring it in prestige projects in the city center

  7. Not going to happen. Boortmeerbeek and Haacht, sure. But Mechelen no way. Inhabitants of Boortmeerbeek are well off and i doubt they want to fund some Mechelen gettos.
