Two unexpected decisions that led to this one

  • 28.06.2025

DES MOINES, Iowa — Iowa politics saw a domino of decisions that will reshape some of the most high profile positions in elected office. Some moves have already happened, while others will still follow.

Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds — the state’s first woman to hold the position after ascending from lieutenant governor after Terry Branstad resigned as governor to become U.S. Ambassador to China — ended her re-election campaign for 2026. Reynolds, a Republican, had held the position since 2017.

U.S. Representative Randy Feenstra, a Republican from Hull who has represented Iowa’s 4th Congressional District since 2021, later followed Reynolds’ announcement with one of his own: he formed an exploratory committee to run for governor in 2026.

Those two major decisions have led to another one: Chris McGowan, who has led the Siouxland Chamber of Commerce since 2011, then announced that he would run for the congressional seat Feenstra currently holds.

McGowan became the first Republican to officially declare his campaign, although several others have been considering a run.

State Senator Lynn Evans, a Republican from Auerelia, formed an exploratory committee for the 4th District seat, but he hasn’t formally announced a campaign yet.

House Majority Leader Matt Windschitl, a Republican from Missouri Valley, has also discussed a possible campaign for the job.

Ryan Melton, a Democrat from Nevada, previously announced his bid for the position, the third straight election where he launched a campaign. However, Melton recently disclosed that he lost his job in the insurance industry and is also dealing with a health matter and has suspended his campaign.
