  1. It does not matter what the government does, the problem is 2 fold one it’s always more expensive than the crap food so those at the lower end can’t afford it. Second is education.

  2. How about cracking down on the ever increasing number of dodgy takeaways and food delivery companies?

Knocking 5p off something that Betty Bigarse wouldn’t touch anyway isn’t going to make one scrap of difference.

  3. Why the government won’t due which would have the biggest effect is just outright ban sale of junk food or takeaways. And provide healthy government subsidised replacements. Let’s be real time is money as well especially for food prep that’s why people go for UPFs as a major reason.

  4. Making healthy food cheaper is fine but they need to stop trying to make unhealthy food more expensive because that doesn’t do anything but hurt everyone

  5. It’s not expensive to make decent healthy food from scratch… it’s having the time & the know how. We need the money to go back into education.

  6. The supermarkets make far more money from crap factory produced ‘food’ than real food.

  7. Do kids still learn and practice cooking in Home Economics? A lot of food is still very cheap, 1kg of carrots for 69p, 500g of spaghetti for 28p etc.. but if they don’t have the skills to cook they’ll always choose the easier, less healthy option.

  8. Honestly some of the um ‘very large’ people I know are regularly eating incredibly greasy takeaways. That’s got to be a big calorie contributor.

Think Starbucks not a coffee coffee with pastry for breakfast and Uber eats crap for dinner. I think the biggest problem is that a lot of people can’t cook or it’s hard to get the base ingredients if there’s only 1 or 2 of you (yes, might be cheaper per portion but if you end up wasting 80% of it it’s not)

  9. How about people stop eating fast food of all types? Plus, watch your portion sizes.

We don’t need breaky, lunch, dinner, plus snacks in between.

The diet injection works because it kills the appetite and enforces portion control..

It was always calories in and out… All the rest was poor science led by lobbyists.

  10. 50 calories a day ain’t going to fix obesity.

Personally I think the shops should have to pair unhealthy and healthier options in the shop and the healthier option should always be cheaper.

    Take walkers crisps….

If the cheese and onion are reduced to 1.50 for 6 then the oven baked (less fat) versions should be e.g. 1.45 for 6. And they should be paired next to each other.

People retain choice and they retain information.

We should be forcing supermarkets to radically redesign their layouts.

But ultimately we should be asking why one of the richest countries on earth is committing national suicide by forcing people into offices, ignoring massive weaknesses in out mental health, refusing to tackle issues of housing etc.

We force people into disgusting trains or busses so they can work in an office then come home stressed and worn out…they don’t have time to cook a healthy meal. A nice bag of minstrels on the way home may be the only good thing they have that day.

This needs to be taken in the round. Everything should be part of the discussion.

I do think…controversial point but as a fat person I will say it…there should be a social stigma against obesity. Fat people are the best liars on earth imo. We’ll tell u how happy we are and how annoying ‘skinny bitches’ are etc…but there isn’t a single one of us wouldn’t take a pill to lose it all overnight.

Many of us take ozempic or wegovy and that’s part of the solution.

But there should slight social.pressure imo.

We’ve normalised it to such an extent that kids now csnt tell.what normal weight over weight and obese is any more.

  11. I didn’t learn to cook properly till later on in life and it’s something I always wish I’d taken the time to do earlier.

I always used to buy things I could shove in the oven or pour out of a jar.

But once I’d started learning how to make one or two things from scratch I’ll never go back and now when I want something new I learn how to make it.

Main advantage for me is I know what’s in it, it’s cheaper and far tastier then anything else.

A few years ago I got into growing Vegetables as well, so come summer time it’s a true delight – Cooking up a batch of Pasta sauce with ingredients from your own garden – Honestly, nothing more satisfying – And, again – Stupidly more tasty.

I remember the first time I tasted a Tomato I’d grown myself – Instantly reminded me of how they used to taste when I was kid – The Tomatoes you get from Supermarkets are forced to grow quickly and lose all their flavour because of it.

Nobody wants to eat Healthy because of the cost and it’s not as nice tasting, but it they put the effort into doing some of the work themselves it’s infinitely better.

  12. I’ve often wondered if a way to potentially tackle the Obesity Crisis would be to bring back statte subsidised dinner clubs and/or communal kitchens? Either eat in cantine style, or take away, or both. A fairly small but varied rotating menu, with actual balanced meals as opposed to just whatever deep fried and chips. I don’t think many people these days would physically attend one, but the take away option might work. Basically, bring back the dinnerlady system.

If I really wanted a take away or didn’t have any food in the house, I’d much rather go for a five pound bangers, mash, and two veg option from the local communal kitchen

  13. Its announcements like this which further proves my point that the government has no clue and seem to judge the majority as having the same living standards as them.

  14. why crackdown on the supermarkets they are just providing a service, granted some of their offers could be more geared towards healthy choices, but should this also be directed to force the food manufacturers to lower sodium, sugar and fat content of products which they use as fillers/flavour enhancers. This will fail harder than minimum alcohol pricing by unit

  15. Yay more nanny state, apparently what everyone wants is to be told in minute detail what they are allowed to eat and what they are allowed to think. Can you feel the freedom yet?

  16. It would help if obese people didn’t receive disability money. My BIL ate himself to a big size and then got awarded pip because of it. That’s not helping him, it’s made him bigger.

  17. Don’t look over here at the tax increases, look over there at the healthy lifestyle.

  18. How about legalising and mandating exercise 🤔 if the government’s keep getting more and more authoritarian they might as well go full force and tie it in with access to the NHS etc since it’s totally irresponsible to let yourself become fat

  19. How about the government fucks off and stops interfering constantly in people’s lives?

  20. Unpopular opinion: eating healthy can be cheap, but there are 2 prerequisites: you need to cook (nothing fancy) and you should be ok eating the same food several days in a row.
