For a nation of relatively small size, it is massively important that the Republic of Ireland widen their playing pool as much as possible.

Down through the years, the FAI have ensured that the team has been major beneficiaries of the ‘granny rule’ by recruiting players born overseas. Those efforts have extended even further in recent years as the Association sought out players from nations such as Spain and Germany.

As it turns out, they might be in the process of bringing in another football from a little closer to home.

That included Friday’s draw with Bohemians, where the 19-year old produced this moment of individual brilliance.

Elding is certainly drawing quite a bit of interest from other clubs, with the player contracted at Sligo until 2027. As it turns out, that interest also extends to the international stage.

Owen Elding was born in England, but he is said to be eligible to play for Ireland. He moved to Ireland as an 11-year old when his father Anthony signed for Sligo Rovers.

Speaking after Friday’s game, Sligo boss John Russell confirmed that the youngster is eligible to play for Ireland. He also revealed that the FAI are in the process of sorting out his international future.

That’s a good question, which you should ask the FAI.

I would have flagged this a while back. I think there is stuff going on in the background trying to get him nationalised.

He has been in the country since he was 11 years of age. He was born in England, his dad obviously then having come over here to play.

There is talk in the background and hopefully it can be resolved as he should be in that Under-21 squad.

I think it’s paperwork that the FAI have to organise.

I’m led to believe it’s close, so I think for everyone it would be good if it happened soon.

A player of his talents would certainly be a fantastic addition to the Ireland ranks, with Elding likely to be drafted straight into the underage squads once his eligibility is sorted out.

Considering his form this season, it might not be too long before he comes under consideration for senior international honours.
