A [“disgustingly high” amount of sewage](https://inews.co.uk/news/business/failing-water-industry-pollution-crisis-reform-mps-3751359?ico=in-line_link) is being pumped into areas where British oysters, mussels and clams are harvested.
The sewage could be a key cause of E. coli – a bug which causes diarrhea and vomiting – that is found in some shellfish waters, experts have warned.
It has led to calls for [water companies](https://inews.co.uk/topic/water-pollution?ico=in-line_link) to stop the “dirty practice” of [discharging waste into shellfish waters](https://inews.co.uk/news/environment/revealed-water-firms-dump-sewage-2380-iconic-blue-flag-beaches-3761774?ico=in-line_link).
While shellfish growers are obliged to clean their produce to remove any bacteria so that it is safe to eat, campaigners warn the scale of the sewage problem poses a potential risk to public health.
Growers say their livelihood is also at risk from the extra costs of dealing with the sewage, and are calling for tougher action on the water companies to reduce spills.
