LALBC NEWS RELEASE

The Los Alamos Local Business Coalition (“Coalition”) invites public review and input on its “Imagine: Local Procurement Initiative,” a proposal aimed at boosting the economic vitality of Los Alamos County by encouraging major local organizations and businesses to increase their purchasing from local businesses. This initiative is one of six forward-thinking ideas detailed in the newly released “Coalition Idea Book,” now available as a PDF on the Coalition website. Each idea is summarized in a one-page idea paper.

The “Local Procurement Initiative” idea seeks to foster a stronger local economy by:

Increasing Awareness and Purchases: Steadily growing the volume of goods and services purchased from local businesses by large community entities such as Los Alamos County, LANL, N3B, Los Alamos Medical Center, Los Alamos Schools, and UNM-LA.

Enhancing Local Business Survivability: By channeling more spending within the community, the initiative aims to increase revenue and improve the retention and success rates of existing local businesses.

Promoting Transparency: The plan includes publishing and tracking data on local purchasing expenditures, providing the public with clear insights into local buying trends.

Fostering Connections: Organizing events to help local businesses connect with and understand the procurement needs of larger organizations.

“We believe that by consciously directing more of our community’s significant purchasing power towards local businesses, we can create a powerful ripple effect that strengthens our entire economic fabric,” said a spokesperson for the Coalition. “This initiative is about building a more resilient and sustainable local economy for everyone.”

The Local Procurement Initiative idea, along with other innovative concepts like the “Storefront Recapture” and “Local Business Marketing Billboard Collective,” ideas were generated through extensive community engagement and forums held since February 2025. These ideas are designed to address the top challenges facing the Los Alamos local business environment, including affordable commercial space, complex regulations, workforce shortages, and access to funding.

The Coalition encourages all citizens, business owners, and community stakeholders to review the complete set of ideas presented in the “Coalition Idea Book” on our website. Your feedback and engagement on the ideas are invited as we work together to build a more prosperous Los Alamos.
