A southbound stretch of the Patricia Bay Highway (Highway 17) has been shut down around Sayward Road following a police incident Sunday morning.

Saanich Police said they received “multiple reports” of a driver operating “dangerously” beginning at 6:30 a.m.

“The vehicle travelled through multiple jurisdictions in the CRD. Officers were able to stop the vehicle around 10 a.m.,” police said.

As a result of the investigation, police said southbound lanes of the highway would be blocked “until further notice” and those heading south from the Saanich Peninsula are asked to find a different route.

According to DriveBC, the southbound lanes are closed from Sayward Road to Island View Road, but a detour is available from Island View Road at East Saanich Road.

A witness on scene said they could see six to seven police officers and an ambulance in the area of Highway 17 at Sayward Road, including one officer in a Greater Victoria Emergency Response Team (GVERT) uniform.

A photo sent in by a CHEK News viewer showed police with guns drawn, with a suspect reportedly on the ground.

A person could also be seen being placed on a stretcher and loaded into an ambulance. BC Emergency Health Services confirmed it was called to the scene at 10:06 a.m. and transported one patient to hospital in stable condition.

This is a developing story. More to come.
