2038 for Germany!? Jesus, I expected a sooner date than that, let’s hope the climate is still ok in the distant future for them to go coal free.
2038? Surely Germany can come up with a solution much faster
2038 is just awful. Like wtf Germany has so much money at its disposal but is all talk and no fucking action.
resignation from coal is big achievement, big thanks to everyone who work make to it possible and I hope countries will not delay these phaseouts.
hopefully gas is next
I will believe it when I see it.
Actually these dates don’t matter much for the total CO2 emissions in the EU.
This is because coal fired power station are subject to the EU emissions trading system. The regulators issue a number of cerificates which polluters have to use if they want to emit CO2. if they don’t have enough they have to buy additional allowances from others.
So, if a country shuts down power stations, the demand in one sector goes down which simply translates to more allowances being used in other sectors.
If European countries really wanted to reduce the emissions volume they had to take more certificates off the market.
Croatia has one coal plant left. So it’s not a really big problem. It’s permit will expire in 2040, and before, that was the planned date to ban the coal. In Glasgow, our Premier announced that the plan is now to ban it in 2033. It is not an official and decided date, but, I guess that is the plan now.
Germany: shuts down nuclear because climate or something, uses coal.
