  1. >The mechanism requires those wishing to leave the building to push a button to release the magnetic lock, then pushing the door to open it.

    >Mr Honey said that was not possible to do without pushing himself out of the chair.

Any disability advisor should know this and wheelchair users do. It’s like they *forgot* they had a adaptated property in the block

  2. The housing association clearly don’t give a fuck, how hard it is to get someone out to do the job?

I really feel for the guy, literally stripping his freedom away because they won’t pay for a door…

  3. Feel sorry for this guy to be honest. It would’ve took 1 meeting/consultation with him to see what his needs actually were.

Shocking from the Housing Association*. Hopefully they get this sorted out quickly for him.

  4. Idiots in charge of this lock change. Does the HA not even have an in-house accessibility consultant?!

  5. The line at the end is appalling – “While the current arrangements are not a long-term solution, the tenant is able to leave the building when others are available to open the communal door.”

Is he meant to just wait in the corridor for someone to take pity on him and open the door? Always have a pal/carer with him? How infantalising and pathetic. Imagine giving that statement and thinking that was ok.

  6. Atrocious

I almost wish he’d missed some kind of benefits appointment because of this just to see how they’d react to that.

While there’s no guarantee the council would have avoided this, it’s obscene that property management companies can profit out of treating people like this.

  7. This is so awful. My kid is physically disabled and I worry about their future in a world that still treats people like this.

  8. That’s ridiculous. I have one of these doors and can see the challenge it would face for a wheelchair user.

  9. They are notoriously bad. I am surprised adult services hasn’t gotten involved with this.
