CHIPPEWA COUNTY, MI – Michigan residents near the Canadian border probably shouldn’t be alarmed if they hear gunshots on Tuesday.

The Michigan State Police in Chippewa County shared a notice at the request of the Canadian Armed Forces 49th Field Artillery Regiment on Monday letting people know about planned activities set to take place on Tuesday.

At approximately 2 pm, Canadian military in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, will conduct a three-round blank artillery gun salute on Topsail Island, located on the St. Mary’s River, to commemorate Canada Day.

Canada Day, originally called Dominion Day, celebrates the anniversary of Canadian Confederation which occurred on July 1, 1867.

“Please be aware the salute will be quite loud,” a statement said. “Residents and visitors nearby who are sensitive to loud sounds are encouraged to plan outdoor activities accordingly.”
