‘It’s just bad food. Meat is completely different. Dairy too. I miss the butter’: the reality of life as a J1 student in Trump’s America

  1. Right, so the difference between meat and dairy between the U.S and Ireland is the Trump? What a stupid headline.

  2. Okay, I’m going to be a bit harsh and say just get on with it. Worst case it is an adventure and they are there for a short period of time, not like they have emigrated lock, stock and barrel.

Although the last few months in the US would really dissuade me from going.

  3. Yes indeed, lots of things are different in different countries.

Some might even say things are a bit … foreign

  4. Food tastes different in other countries.

    Whooda thunk it?

  5. American food was considered dangerous for human consumption under EU regulations long before Trump took office.

  6. I can buy Kerry Gold in Publix here in Atlanta and it’s pretty good. Can also buy grass-fed beef that makes a decent burger. Irish and British import foods are fairly easy to find here – I have sausage rolls, b&w pudding, crisps, biscuits and chocolate arriving on my doorstep on Wednesday. Just in time for my anti-4th of July dining. 🙂

  7. That has been the case under every single administration? Trump has nothing to do with meat and dairy being lower standard and it’s not like you can’t buy Kerrygold at practically every single supermarket in the U.S.

  8. This is a dumb headline. Food in the US is not great, but it’s not because of Trumps America, it’s always sucked. Kerrygold is available pretty much everywhere though. And quality food is there, you just have to look a little harder. A J1 student complaining about this in June is hilarious though, they probably only left mammys house 3 weeks ago.

  9. Trump changed the meat and butter? Fkn hell 😂😂😂

  10. Oh woe is me, it’s like living in a foreign country!!!

  11. That’s a dopey headline. I’ve been over there a few times and yeah, if you eat solely in franchises and fast food places, it’s utter garbage(same as everywhere). But restaurants and the likes are bloody great.

Still though, I’m onboard with the Trump hate train. He’s a bawbag.

  12. There’s many things you can blame trump for.

But the food isn’t one of them. American food is swill and has been for decade’s

  13. Not sure I’d want my name appearing in the article if I were them. I’d really be only slightly surprised if they got deported over it.

  14. This might sound weird, but after spending the last few weeks touring Europe, I found the dairy tastes mostly shit in Germany, Austria and Italy. People don’t realise how good we have it in Ireland.

  15. Haha jesus what a wildly different approach to a J1 than my own. After rent, I spent the rest of it on whatever cheap booze I could source, supplemented by a $5 Little Caesar’s pizza to cover off my well rounded diet.

These J1 students should fuck off to Ballymaloe if they are looking for food provenance.

  16. Another example of people having wildly generalized opinions based on very limited experience – just vibes and anecdotal certainty.

  17. America has great food quality, it’s just really overpriced. You can literally find anything in the US.

  18. She’s not wrong but the quality of the food was basically the last thing on my mind when I went on J1.

  19. In America quality food is abundant. But most can’t afford it.

  20. I did two years in Australia. The butter was shite, the milk left a lot to be desired, the beef had s weird gamey taste, but at the same time, I would kill for a chicken Parma from the Windsor Alehouse again. You need time to get used to what’s around you, and people on J1s simply don’t have that time

  21. Breaking news: Irish student misses Mammy’s cooking.

  22. America has never exactly been known for its food quality. Or its coffee. Or its beer

  23. I did the J1 back in 2000, lived in New Hampshire (Hampton Beach). Absolutely loved it. But I remember the worst food I ever tasted was a cake from a store there. Hard to describe but it was akin to eating whatever was down the side of the couch. Also, the McDonalds burgers were way more fatty than here, the fat would leak into the bun. Still tasty though.

As long as they all return safe (remember that balcony collapse years ago?) that’s all that matters.

  24. People don’t realise that there is good high quality food in America. It’s just very expensive. It’s the opposite in Ireland, eating healthy, making your own food out of basic, fresh ingredients is the cheapest way and eating junk is very expensive.

  25. Ordinary, standard American food is over processed and full of chemicals, how do I know? My body tells me this everytime I visit the country.
I’ve never had a shite like I’ve had while in America, I mean the biggest, thickest, longest and smoothest logs you can imagine that would fit inside a person. And you can see every bit of it when it’s just sitting there half floating in the water in the bowl.

  26. If you are in any major US city it’s easy to find a quality supermarket and get top notch food, and it doesn’t have to break the bank e.g. Trader Joe’s or Whole Foods.

  27. We visited Ireland last year, and immediately noticed that beef was much tastier than what we typically have here in the U.S. We were told that cattle were mostly grass fed there (as opposed to largely corn fed here), and I assumed that was the reason. Whatever the cause, it did taste significantly better there.

  28. I feel like it’s more different food and no different from many other countries

  29. Bread and cheese were terrible when I was there. Milk was ok. Fast food is bad everywhere

  30. Compared to Ireland, the milk, meat and butter in America are not great

Yes I know there are exceptions, but that has been my experience..

  31. Bit of advice mate, go to whole foods and pay a bit more, buy as much veg and things that aren’t packaged and wash them before eating. Try get you meat from the butcher section rather than pre packed. Unfortunately milk and other dairy you’re stuck with, bread too. Try not to buy frozen stuff too regularly as it’s usually full of additives. Most of which are banned in the EU.
