So i went to a city called Ventspils which to be fair has only 30 000 people but it was absolutely empty. We went through the urban areas and the main city promenade and through our walk, we only met around 40 or less people. What is happening in this city, is it normal for the streets to be this empty? Plus a funny thing, one of the only people we saw on the promenade was an old man sitting on a bench, but when we got closer we realised it was just a statue.

  1. It’s not a holiday. Eweryone is at work. Both the locals and the tourists which tend to come on weekends/holidays.

  2. There’s the reputation that Ventspils is for people until 5 and over 50

  3. Because it’s well known to be a shithole.
    No nightlife compared to Liepāja.
Too many russians, and the little napoleon Lembergs have done his magic.

  4. It always has been so.
You could drink beers and smoke cigarettes in the evenings there in the market with a girl sitting on your lap, and police drove by and just gave you thumbs up.
Everything was nice back then. 😩

  5. It’s very windy in the last week, I didn’t leave my home at all

  6. It’s usually so, even on weekends. When something happens people come out. Also after 18 on workingdaus there is no one outside. You can meet people at local mall Tobago and on gasstations. Its kinda depresing there atleast for me.

  7. Ventspils is a somewhat weird place. Used to go there a lot a few years ago for work. It always kind of creeped me out how everything seems very clean and well-kept, while at the same time it’s dead silent and there are almost never any people around and nothing going on. It’s a bit better in the summer, but in the colder months it legit feels like uncanny valley. 😀 Another thing that I find strange is that there are only like 2 decent places to eat in all of Ventspils.

Very strange vibe for a relatively large town with a university campus and thus lots of students. Especially when compared to the nearby and very lively Liepāja.

  8. There’s nothing to do, no hotels, no nice pubs, no nightlife.

  9. Because every town outside of the capital has the population density of Greenland.

  10. Right?? I remember thinking the same when I visited with my family. Weird vibe.

  11. It’s planed stupily, the suburbs are near the center and the microdistricts are an hour walk away. The city has a reputation for being like North Korea – completely perfect, clean, but also fully empty

  12. To esmu vienmēr teicis, spoku pilsēta! Un tieši šodien ar gimeni atbraucām! Nekas nav mainījies!
