Hi everyone,
I’m planning a road trip to Latvia with my friends (the route is shown in the image).
I was wondering if anyone has any recommendations for places worth visiting along the way—or even a bit off the route (we’re flexible and happy to adjust it).

We’re interested in all kinds of spots: historical sites, scenic views, unique landmarks, or any hidden gems you might know about.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

  1. I would probably go through Sigulda, Līgatne, Cēsis, Valmiera if we follow this route.

  3. Rundāles Castle is one of our more iconic historical sites, and it’s not far from your route entering Latvia.

    Also, definitely make a stop in the beach town of Saulkrasti, which is on your route. It’s lovely there, especially in the evening.

    As someone else mentioned, it’s also definitely worth taking a little detour (a little east of Saulkrasti) through Sigulda, Līgatne and Cēsis – homes of unique castles, quiet villages, rolling hills, caves and wine.

  4. I’d really recommend staying in Latvia for at least two days, or even longer if you can. There’s so much to see and do here.

    If you enjoy hiking, the Mežtaka trail section from Līgatne to Cēsis is absolutely stunning, winding along the Amata and Gauja rivers. Plus, the Rakši Camel Zoo is nearby if you’re looking for something unique. Cēsis itself is a cool and historic town that’s definitely worth a visit.

    The Saulkrasti and Lilaste beaches are my favorites for a peaceful swim or sunbathing. And of course, Riga offers a ton of activities and fantastic restaurants to explore.

    I’d also highly suggest trying to find an Airbnb, perhaps along the Salaca River, where you can enjoy a sauna, take a dip in the river, and go for a walk in the forest. It’s a wonderful way to experience the natural beauty of Latvia.

  5. You should go through Biržai park in Lithuania, good stuff there.
    A bit of a detour, but worth it.

    Otherwise all the interesting stuff in Latvia is a significant detour from that route. So you gonna miss basically all of it.

  16. This is not really a road trip if you are just going straight through the country, not stopping for anything.
