Turkey aims to sign international deals for two new nuclear power plants by year-end if it receives competitively priced offers that meet its localisation goals, a senior energy official said on Tuesday.
Speaking at a nuclear plants summit in Istanbul, Salih Sari, acting head of the Energy Ministry’s nuclear projects unit, said the Sinop plant is expected to start generating power before 2035, and the Thrace plant shortly after.
Turkey has been in talks with South Korea and Russia for the planned Sinop and China for the northwestern nuclear plants.
He said work continues on regulations to allow private sector investment in small modular reactors (SMRs), aiming to finalise the framework this year.
Turkey also plans a new research reactor to support domestic industry. It currently has two.
