As the vote-a-rama — which started around 9:35 a.m. ET on Monday — stretched through the night, senators read, chatted and tried to keep warm in the chamber.
Some senators bundled up in pashminas, like Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith, while others, like Sen. Elizabeth Warren, donned hoodies and sweatshirts.
Sen. Lisa Murkowski brought a large, fuzzy blanket to the floor, which Sen. Susan Collins commandeered after Murkowski stepped away to speak with Senate Majority Leader John Thune.
Murkowski, a key swing vote, chatted with Thune for more than 30 minutes, before next speaking with Senate Majority Whip John Barrasso.
Some GOP senators appeared to be discussing President Donald Trump’s post on Truth Social about Elon Musk, and Sen. Mike Lee did a brief impression of the president for several of his colleagues, including Sen. John Kennedy of Louisiana.
Sen. John Cornyn stayed in his seat between votes, reading on his Kindle. The senior senator from Texas, a prolific reader, told CNN that he is reading a biography of William F. Buckley Jr.
Hyde-Smith was spotted playing solitaire on her tablet earlier in the night.
