France attempts to attract researchers fleeing Trump’s cuts • FRANCE 24 English

a welcome for the first of a series of American researchers applying to relocate to the south of France the exmarse university program is called Safe Place for Science the university president said it was a sad twist of history that some American scientists are coming to France seeking a space of freedom thought and research he wants the creation of a new status of refugee scientist i believe that when you set up a scientific asylum program you have to be consistent and also have a law protecting them as scientific refugees that’ll speed things up and protect them and their families better the safe place for science initiative was launched earlier this year it has attracted scholars from prominent US institutions such as Stanford Yale and NASA offering them access to the university’s laboratories research facilities and funding two of the US academics spoke about their recent experiences in the United States and reaction to being in France
the politics is very much impinging on science making it difficult to to carry out scientific endeavor i did not plan to come to France before Trump’s election uh I would not I do not wish to say I I classify myself as a refugee the principle of academic freedom uh as well as the entire system of research and higher education in the United States is really under attack in his second term the US President Donald Trump has targeted research including cuts to university funding over equal employment and diversity offices speaking last month the French president Emanuel Macron said that Europe had to open the door to US researchers and academics saying it had to become a refuge

Researchers hailing from prominent American scientific institutions make their way to Aix Marseille Université, where the “Safe Place for Science” initiative attempts to build a home for “refugee scientists” fleeing US President Donald Trump’s cuts to federal spending for scientific research.

  11. I'm surprised the US isn't more in favour of diversity and inclusion, considering that for the past 8 years they've had presidents with mental disabilities.

  16. This is not going to go well for USA. The only reason they have been on top is because they attracted people pursuing higher education who then went on to contribute to the country. With that option ceasing to exist, and with America also deporting illegal immigrants, Americans would have to work blue collar jobs at meager salaries and wouldn't be able to afford higher education that is needed to keep USA technologically superior. Their downfall has already begun.

  17. The last 20 years, the left have ruined sience and reasearch. not giving economic support if the research aint on theire terms.
