Deadly crashes drop for 2nd-straight year in TN, data shows

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) – The Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security has released new data showing the downward trend of traffic fatalities in the Volunteer State.

The updated TN Traffic Fatality Dashboard shows that there were 636 fatal crashes in 2023 (year-to-date).

Since then, there has been a nearly 14% drop to 2024 and then another nearly 11% drop in 2025.

The data shows the following 1,673 records (as of July, 1, 2025):

2023: 636 traffic deaths2024: 548 traffic deaths2025: 489 traffic deaths

Through the first six months of the past three years (2023-2025), the most fatal crashes occurred in April and May.

The state also released other data connected to the fatality crashes, including driver factors. In 2023, Tennessee saw 87 teen drivers involved in fatal crashes compared to 71 in 2024 and 44 in 2025. Older drivers involved in fatal crashes were most prominent in 2024, with 138 compared to 119 in 2023 and 2025.
