You should be able to find a wizard-looking person in Porto, or a group, they are university students and will help you for sure. If you’re not confortable with men, they will point you to their women friends.

Have you tried some city outside of Porto? Maybe with train connection. Braga or Aveiro for example. Could be a closer one tho

Ask around in university groups in places like Facebook. I would also ask around in student associations from the Universities, they can probably get the word out or find solutions. Since it’s not a rental for months I’m sure people will be happy to help out.
Well given your situation I’d not be too picky of who houses you. Your safety concerns are understandable, but you aren’t in a place where you can afford to prioritize them. With that said, if I were you I’d look at every hostel/Airbnb/all others accommodation websites of the kind in that area or surrounding areas that are easily accessible by public transports and contact as many as possible. If you’re really too short of money, don’t wait, go outside, maybe to any university campus or alike institutions, and strike conversations with every person you see, hopefully you will find a goodwill human that can help you.

Just rent a room on airbnb.
Airbnb is probably your best bet, both Matosinhos as VN Gaia & Maia have metro (well, tram really) connections to Porto city center, there’s about zero chance you can’t find accomodation at a reasonable price without worrying about hosts.
Find a Pensão/Residencial. Usually older buildings that house people, and probably aren’t on those online platforms. Search for them on Google Maps or look/ask around downton.

Like other people said, Gaia is basically the same city as Porto but tourists don’t know that.
There are decent airbnbs in Gaia for reasonable prices I think.
