Tella Thera Eco-Luxury Hotel Set to Open in Crete’s Kissamos Region with Landmark Sustainability Features

A remarkable new entry in Greece’s luxury tourism scene is set to begin operations on July 14, as the Tella Thera resort gets ready to greet its first guests in the scenic Kissamos region of Western Crete. This premium hospitality venture stands out not just for its lavish offerings, but for its bold commitment to sustainable development. Valued at €10 million, the resort is the first eco-conscious hotel to be officially integrated under Greece’s Development Law of 2024, where it earned top marks under the new sustainability-focused assessment framework. The property is currently operating in a soft-opening phase.

A Strategic Location Rooted in Nature and Potential

Crete was not chosen by chance. The island, known for its abundant natural resources, favourable climate, and local agricultural wealth, provides the ideal setting for a hotel focused on energy efficiency, environmental harmony, and authenticity. The region’s growing appeal among international travellers seeking unspoiled rural escapes, combined with its potential for energy independence, made Kissamos the perfect launchpad for a next-generation eco-resort.

Design and Architecture with a Purpose

Architecturally, Tella Thera blends seamlessly into the Cretan landscape. The hotel consists of 20 private suites and one exclusive villa, with individual unit sizes ranging from 140 to 300 square metres. The layout is amphitheatrical, a thoughtful configuration that maximizes privacy, natural light, and uninterrupted views of the Mediterranean terrain.

The architectural blueprint was led by Pierris Architects, while construction was managed by Hellenic Homes, ensuring the build aligned closely with bioclimatic principles. Every element of the design was crafted with eco-integration in mind—from the use of native stone and timber to the plant-covered rooftops and photovoltaic systems that generate clean energy.

In addition, the hotel employs thermal subsoil energy systems, further reducing its environmental footprint by using the Earth’s natural temperatures to regulate indoor climates efficiently. These efforts were directed under the energy strategy expertise of Professor Agis Papadopoulos from the University of Thessaloniki, who guided the development’s eco-energy framework.

International Recognition Before Opening

The project’s attention to detail and sustainability innovation has not gone unnoticed. Even before its full launch, Tella Thera has been awarded prestigious honours at the 2024 International Property Awards in the categories of Hotel Architecture and New Small Hotel Development. These accolades affirm the project’s status as a trailblazer in both aesthetic design and environmental responsibility.

Conscious Living and Premium Amenities

Tella Thera promises guests more than just luxurious accommodation—it delivers an experience rooted in wellness, culinary excellence, and local connection. The property features a signature restaurant named Anemoia, which will operate under a zero-waste philosophy and highlight locally sourced, seasonal ingredients. The menu is curated to reflect the flavours of Crete, honouring the island’s agricultural legacy while promoting responsible consumption.

Other on-site amenities include a fully equipped gym, a wellness spa, and thoughtfully designed common spaces where guests can gather, relax, or participate in community-led activities. The central reception area is designed like a traditional village square, complete with a pool bar, reinforcing a sense of place and sociability.

Landscape architect Karolos Hanikian of Greenways designed the surrounding environment, incorporating outdoor yoga decks, meditative green spaces, and walking trails that encourage immersion in nature. The use of soft infrastructure, including shaded relaxation zones and open-air lounges, supports the hotel’s low-impact philosophy while enhancing guest wellbeing.

Appealing to the Conscious Luxury Traveller

Tella Thera is squarely aimed at a modern traveller—someone who values authenticity, sustainability, and seclusion. The hotel is purpose-built for guests who seek high-standard accommodations in non-urban settings, far removed from the noise and congestion of conventional tourist hubs.

The branding strategy, developed by AS Strategy, seeks to position Tella Thera as more than a destination. Instead, the brand focuses on atmosphere, emotional resonance, and a genuine connection to the landscape. By prioritizing storytelling and visual identity aligned with the surrounding nature, the resort hopes to appeal to eco-aware global travellers and luxury seekers alike.

Greece has unveiled Tella Thera, a pioneering €10 million eco-luxury resort in Kissamos, Crete, designed to set new standards in sustainable hospitality. Opening July 14, the bioclimatic retreat blends award-winning architecture, renewable energy, and zero-waste dining for a conscious travel experience.

Whether it’s a couple looking for a romantic retreat, a wellness enthusiast searching for quiet renewal, or a sustainability-minded globetrotter seeking a deeper connection to Crete, Tella Thera offers a holistic experience—where luxury meets consciousness.
