The State Police received information that on 24 June this year, in Daugavpils, a woman born in 1943 got a call from an unidentified person that posed as a lawyer and told her that a relative had been in an accident and money was needed to help. A money courier arrived at the woman’s home and took 4,000 euros in cash from her.
After investigating the circumstances of the incident, police officers identified the person involved in the crime. On 27 June 2025, law enforcement officers in Daugavpils detained and placed in temporary detention a young person born in 2007 who had been acting as a money courier in this scheme.
After her arrest, the young woman admitted to law enforcement officers that, while acting as a money courier, she had participated in three other cases of telephone fraud.
In the other cases in Daugavpils, the fraudsters lied to the people they called, saying that a relative had been involved in a traffic accident. The fraudsters managed to gain the trust of the victims and agree on the transfer of money. On 26 June 2025, a person handed over €12,000 to the money courier. In another case, on 25 June, €9,000 was defrauded from a person, and €1,800 on 9 June.
The police have information that in all cases the young woman handed over the defrauded money to another person involved in the scheme.
Criminal proceedings have been initiated against the person for fraud, if committed on a large scale or by a group of persons acting in concert. The punishment is imprisonment for up to five years or short-term imprisonment, or probation, or community service, or a fine, with or without confiscation of property.
The State Police warns residents not to hand over cash or bank cards to strangers at the request of unknown callers, or to disclose access data to bank accounts. Such telephone calls should be terminated immediately. The State Police urges residents to be vigilant and to remind their relatives, especially the elderly, about financial security.
