  1. Great. Im a blood cancer survivor and it makes my blood boil Instantly when I hear of shit heads like this. All they do is inspire other assholes to do the same and make people distrust real cancer patients and victims. Hope he gets a slap of the law.
    Gowl

  2. He must be counting on there being a hurling fan or two on the jury because the evidence here is so overwhelming against him its bizarre he didnt just plead guilty and get it over with

  3. I know people who are close to him. They revere him so much, they would still help him out in any way possible.

  4. Himself and his sister are the most disgusting people imaginable. Was this something they were thought as children, hard to imagine that two siblings would end up doing these things to people?

  5. It’s gonna be infuriating when he somehow gets a slap on the wrist as punishment

  6. I still can’t believe someone would pretend something so horrible, I know it happens but I genuinely don’t understand.

  7. Hurling legend DJ Carey is due to go on trial today accused of falsely claiming he had cancer and defrauding people into paying him for treatment.
The former Kilkenny hurler will appear before Dublin Circuit Criminal Court where he is facing deception and forgery charges.
He has pleaded not guilty and the trial is expected to take up to five weeks.

Mr Carey (54) is charged with 21 offences under the Theft and Fraud Act – 19 counts of deception and two of using a false instrument.
The charges name 23 alleged victims; some are individual men and women; others are couples.

The offences are alleged to have happened at unknown locations within the state on dates between 2014 and 2022.
The 19 deception charges state he dishonestly by deception induced alleged victims to make monetary payment to him after he fraudulently claimed to have cancer and needed finances to obtain treatment.

The two other charges allege he used a false instrument with the intention of inducing another person to accept it as genuine.
Mr Carey was charged in September 2023, when he came before Blanchardstown District Court.
In that hearing, Detective Sergeant Michael Bourke of Waterford station gave evidence that the accused made no reply to any of the charges after caution.

He was sent forward to the circuit court in and when he appeared there in November 2023, his barrister said a jury would be required. The court heard it was hoped the trial would take three to four weeks but there was a “potential for overrun” and it could take five weeks.
Under bail conditions, Mr Carey was to sign on at his local garda station, be contactable at all times at the phone number he had provided, surrender his passport and not apply for any other travel documents.

He was also to give gardai details if he intended to travel out of the country and the address he intended to reside at.
He was told to have no contact, directly or indirectly, with any of the alleged victims, including by phone, email or social media.
The prosecution was ordered to disclose the accused’s garda interview video to the defence.
Free legal aid was granted after the court heard he had no income whatsoever.

Mr Carey, who is from a large sporting family, has enjoyed a hugely successful GAA career, with a number of Inter-County titles under his belt as well as managing and coaching teams after his retirement.
He is considered by many to be one of the greatest hurlers in the history of the game, having won nine All-Star awards, as well as being twice named Texaco Hurler of the Year.
Mr Carey retired in 2006 following 138 National League and Championship appearances.

  8. Turns up to court in an old wardrobe with a hoover duct taped to it:
“my client is in an iron lung!”
