It's the gaming thread – and not just video games!

What are your thoughts on board games? Any in particular that you love and routinely play? Me, I'm a sucker for Cluedo!

What's had you twiddling your buttons or rolling your dice this week?

  1. I love board games but I don’t get the chance to play them as often these days

  2. Board games are a great way to spend an evening, card games as well. Recently, we’ve been playing a lot of Fluxx, which is great!

I’d recommend CDSK as well. It’s a very good trivia game, but you choose the difficulty of each question and get to move based on how difficult it was. Very good risk/reward. Hive is a fun strategy game.

  3. None for week due to temperature.. Its too hot and trying to play games means the graphics card will then put out even more heat..

  4. I watched somebody playing a bit of VTMB, so I just had to reinstall it and start playing again. Clan Quest mod this time round, which I weirdly have not played yet.

  5. Finally finished Starfield. The plan was to uninstall it to make room for other games, but the ending got me curious about NG+, so I’m going a longer. Try getting a few more achievements.

I figure I’ve got plenty of time before I need the space for FFVII Remake. And I just know the moment I uninstall Starfield we’ll get DLC news.

  6. My favourite board game is Hive. But this week I’ve been mostly still playing Fantasy Island.

  7. I love board games but I don’t like to play solo and don’t have any friends nearby who are that bothered unfortunately.

So it’s video games all the way, and this week it’s **Death Stranding 2**. I’m loving it, though it isn’t without its issues which, being British, I will focus on first:

It crashes. I’ve had several crashes and whilst most weren’t awful, last night it crashed during a cut scene at the end of a chapter, meaning I had to play the end section again. It didn’t take ages but it ruined the enjoyment.

There’s more focus on combat, which is fine and don’t get me wrong it’s fun, but it’s way too easy. You get so many weapons, with so much ammo, you can’t lose. Human camps offer a bit more challenge than BT areas, which so far (I’m 40hrs in) consist of one type of BT that you can hit with grenades from a ridiculous distance.

The lack of accessibility options. For me, this only matters so far as slight QoL stuff but if you actually need those options, you’re screwed. There is one volume control for example, and at times I can’t hear what’s being said over the background noise. So I turn on subtitles, which only have one size.

All that aside, it’s still a superb game with the same addictive gameplay from the first but bigger, better looking and with more of everything. The story isn’t quite as batshit but it’s heading that way, which is fine by me. Above all, there are so many roads to build, and I love building roads.

  8. I’ve been running a Boardgame Club down at the local for a couple of months now. It’s been really good. Running a DnD campaign tonight, but we’ve been playing all sorts.

[Spots](https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/372559/spots) and [Courtisans](https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/402283/courtisans) are some cool little quick games.

[Mycelia](https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/378476/mycelia) and [Treasure Island](https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/242639/treasure-island) have gone down well for longer games.

  9. My fiance bought me Pac Man Quoridor for my birthday last week, its great for quick games when you havent got time for something longer.

  10. My family and I love a game of Payday. It’s so simple in nature but we’ve managed to twist the rules a whole bunch and it’s become a very dangerous game to play around drinks.

We’ve made a whole new deck of cards for it, I designed them myself and got them printed professionally and it’s expanded the replayability tenfold. On top of this we also got a huge bag of Pokémon cards which we use to settle impasses within the game. Quick Pokémon battle and the winner takes priority of the move and the loser has to take a shot.

It gets dangerous and I love it.

  11. I’ve always loved Cluedo, never could play it much as a kid though because I didn’t have anyone to play it with.

Still got 4 main games on the go at once.

FC25 is chugging along, it’s just so easy to play a few games of it in career mode each day.

Still playing through Yakuza 5, in chapter 2 of part 4 now. Done substories and training (seriously, the pool minigame can get in the sea, I had to do it on intermediate for the training last night and it’s been so imprecise ever since Yakuza 3) and just doing the side story at the moment. I think I’ve got far enough that the risk of burnout is low now, it’s been a good entry in the series but my god is it long. Looking forward to moving onto 6, which HLTB tells me is substantially shorter than 5, and then on to LaD.

I’m slowly making progress through Clair Obscur, done the first of two objectives that came up at the same time (>!Axons!<), still enjoying it, the story and the characters are great and the combat is such a rush of dopamine when you nail a parry. Convinced at this point though that >!there’s some kind of connection between Maelle and Alicia!<.

I think I’m in the end game of Fantasy Life i now as well. Want to finish the story so that I can start grinding the game in earnest. It’s been fun, worthy successor to the original, but I think playing through the original so recently has made it feel weird in places, I was trying to do things that would have worked in the original but didn’t in the new one.

  12. Not sure if it counts but I’ve recently started getting into TCGs, in particular [Star Wars: Unlimited](https://starwarsunlimited.com/). No idea if we’re doing it right (YouTube videos have been great though) but we’re having a lot of fun. A game takes around 20-30mins, and you’re supposed to do a best of three so it’s a nice activity to do of an evening instead of watching telly.

  13. Played DnD last night. Printing more tanks for Team Yankee currently.

More of a tabletop gamer than a board gamer these days but still partial to a game or two of Flash Point Fire Rescue.

  14. I bought **Space Marine 2** yesterday, no idea when I’ll get around to it but I had a voucher to use so figured I’d go for it.

  15. My wife will occasionally get excited about a new MTG release and we’ll attempt to play it before ultimately getting frustrated with it. I don’t think “card” board games are for us. I do like a game of Monopoly now and then though.

In terms of PC gaming, I’m still working my way back through **Mad Max**. Although being in an 80’s inspired streak, I did pick up **Robocop: Rogue City** cheap in the Steam summer sale.

  16. There’s a board game called Labyrinth that we play as a family. You have to move around collecting treasure but you also move the maze bits around stopping other players. Hard to explain but it’s fun.

  17. This week I have mostly been playing…

The Outer Wilds. It’s amazing, and I can’t believe I slept on it for so long.

Also, has anyone got any suggestions for ‘escape room’ type board games that would be good for 8-10 year olds?

  18. Trying to figure out which of my billion steam games work with a controller. Been keyboard & mouse all my life and never really used a console but figured lets try it

Unfortunately a lot of the strategy games I play aren’t really controller friendly

  19. Still occasionally play Magic The Gathering but used to play a whole shitload of board games, table top wargames and RPGs.

    I miss those days.

  20. Working my way through **Mario Kart World** doing the GPs and Knockout Tours at all CCs as well as (slowly) unlocking everything else. I also like just firing up free roam and taking pretty pictures of sunsets it pretending I’m in Jurassic Park whilst also doing the P-Switch challenges.

I’ve also gone back and restarted **Metroid Prime Remastered**. Maybe it’s my imagination but it looks right luvverly on the Switch 2. It was always a very pretty game though – even back on the humble Cube.

  21. It’s been about 10 years but I’m finally back at a regular board game evening. They seem like a nice bunch. It’s in a pub on a Monday which is a bit of a mixed blessing – it’s quiet so we’ve got space, but it’s quiet so the pub tends to shut early and I can’t really play the longer games I enjoy.

Played **Welcome Back To the Dungeon** and **Sushi Go** this week.

  22. Cranium was always one of my favourites, particularly if you’ve got a lot of friends over and the drinks are flowing

  23. I guess this post means some people have just lost The Game.
