Hello all!

I’m a university graduate from the United States. There is a good chance that I’ll soon receive a job offer to work in Bonn. I will not be getting a blue card, but rather a normal work permit.

My plan for getting my work permit after I receive a job offer has been the following:

Book a long stay Air bnb or Wunderflat –> Move over to Germany and do my Anmeldung –> Apply for my work/residence permit while living in Bonn –> wait about three months until I can start working.

The only ( obvious ) problem with this plan is that I’ll have to be living in Germany for at least about three months while I wait for my work/residence permit to be approved. I have about $13000 in savings, so this is possible, but I would prefer to spend less time unemployed while in Germany.

I recently stumbled upon the [fast-track procedure for skilled workers](https://www.make-it-in-germany.com/en/looking-for-foreign-professionals/entering/the-fast-track-procedure-for-skilled-workers). Have any of you had experience with this procedure? If I’m understanding this correctly, this way I can get my residence permit before stepping foot in Germany. Is that right? When do I have to show proof of housing in this procedure?

  1. You do have the option of apply for a normal work visa before entering Germany. While Americans don’t have to, you still can. Then you can start working immediately while your residence permit is being processed.
