An informal five-party meeting on the Cyprus issue will be held at the United Nations headquarters in New York in mid-July, UN Secretary-General spokesperson Stephane Dujarric announced during a press briefing.

“Following the informal meeting on the Cyprus issue in an expanded format, which took place in Geneva on March 17–18 of this year, the Secretary-General will convene on July 16 and 17, here at the United Nations headquarters, the leaders of the Greek Cypriots and the Turkish Cypriots, as well as representatives of the guarantor powers, Greece, Turkey, and the United Kingdom, for yet another informal meeting on the Cyprus issue,” Dujarric stated.

“The meeting will provide the opportunity to continue the dialogue and exchange views regarding the progress that has been made since March,” he added.

Cyprus has remained divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded the island following a coup backed by Greece’s military regime of the time. Only Turkey recognizes the Turkish Cypriot declaration of independence in the island’s northern third, where it maintains more than 35,000 troops.
