The World Bank Group has appointed Ulrich Schmitt as country manager for the Republic of Moldova. He replaces Inguna Dobraja, who has been on assignment in Chisinau since July 2021, IPN reports.

The new country manager aims to actively collaborate with the public and private sectors to identify solutions that will contribute to job creation, human capital improvement, and increased competitiveness in the Republic of Moldova.

Despite the crises caused by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and other development challenges, Ulrich Schmitt is confident that Moldova’s status as a candidate country for European Union membership, together with investments in resilience and strong momentum for reform, offer the country real opportunities for long-term sustainable growth.

Ulrich Schmitt, a German citizen, has over 20 years of experience at the World Bank. He recently served as operations manager for Myanmar and Thailand, based in Bangkok. He holds a PhD in natural resource management from the Technical University of Munich.

Through its work in Moldova, the World Bank Group supports regulatory reforms and promotes green, resilient, and inclusive development, pursuing three key objectives: creating jobs, improving human capital, and increasing green investments, particularly in infrastructure and agriculture, according to a press release from the institution.

The World Bank Group consists of: The World Bank (which includes the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development – BIRD – and the International Development Association – IDA), the International Finance Corporation (CFI), the Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency (AMGI), and the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID).
