Michael Collins on this day 100 years ago, 16th April 1922

  1. Collins was caught up in an apparent assassination attempt on this day 100 years ago. Seemingly a body of men appeared out of 44 Parnell Square in Dublin and shots were fired at Collins. He claimed they were probably trying to ‘seize’ him. Three nights previously the militant wing of the anti-Treaty executive had occupied the Four Courts, so maybe this was a Liam Mellows or Rory O’Connor sanctioned job or just some random attack.

Edit to this: this image is from July or August 1922. Collins took up the post of commander-in-chief of the National Army on 12 July. He wouldn’t have worn a military uniform prior to that from what I understand.

  2. If he lived, we were heading for a military dictatorship. I cant say it would have been any worse than what actually happned in the years following independence.

  3. What might have been? You have to wonder if he didn’t leave Dublin then. I like to think it would have been better than what happened but I suppose we’ll never know

  4. Pretty mad to think all pics of him he’s at most just a couple years older than me….looks like a mature, tough fella and then here’s me wanking into a sock.

  5. I remember reading in [a book about him and the Squad](https://books.google.co.jp/books/about/The_Squad.html?id=5gNboMN6PWUC&source=kp_book_description&redir_esc=y) that, even after peace was achieved and Collins was Chairman of the Provisional Government, he was still planning assassinations of people who had been on the British side of the war lmao. The author made the argument that this was troubling enough that he wouldn’t have been a very good peacetime leader.

  6. One of teachers I in my school claims she’s Michael Collins’ grandaughter or great grandaughter or sum

  7. Not sure if I’m missing the joke, it was 22nd August. You’ve mixed him up with Jesus maybe?
