Despite all the awe and adventure, life in space is a constant lesson in limitations. With zero gravity, no breathable air, and extreme physics, astronauts must adapt in ways that feel alien to life on Earth.
Here are 10 things you just can’t do in space, no matter how badly you want to:
1. You Can’t Cry Normally
Tears don’t fall. They pool around your eyes because there’s no gravity to pull them down your face. Astronauts often describe it as “having a bubble of water in your eye.”
2. You Can’t Use the Bathroom Like You Do on Earth
Toilets in space rely on suction, not gravity. Astronauts strap in, and fans pull waste into separate containers. Pee goes one way, poop goes another.
3. You Can’t Taste Food Properly
In space, fluids shift toward your head, causing nasal congestion. This dulls your sense of taste, making food feel bland. That’s why astronauts love spicy sauces.
4. You Can’t Take a Shower
There are no traditional showers in space. Astronauts use rinseless wipes, no-rinse shampoo, and cloths soaked in water — like camping hygiene in zero-G.
5. You Can’t Sleep Horizontally

There’s no “up” or “down,” so astronauts float while sleeping in sleeping bags strapped to walls. No pillows needed.
6. You Can’t Light a Candle or Campfire
Fire behaves oddly in microgravity — forming blue, spherical flames instead of tall flickers. Open flames are banned due to the fire risk.
7. You Can’t Burp Without Risk
Burping in space often leads to a “wet burp” — i.e., vomiting — because stomach contents don’t settle. Astronauts have to be careful post-meal.
8. You Can’t Run Freely or Walk Normally
Forget jogging. Without gravity, your feet float, so astronauts use treadmills with harnesses to simulate foot impact. Walking becomes drifting.
9. You Can’t Wash Clothes

Laundry would waste too much water. Astronauts wear clothes repeatedly, then jettison used garments into space or incinerate them during re-entry.
10. You Can’t Escape Body Odour Easily
Air gets filtered, but smells linger. Without airflow pulling odours away, enclosed modules can get funky. Good hygiene and air scrubbers are essential.
