6. Wow, actually some awesome news here. I’ll need to read more of the specifics to get a full opinion but if this entirely removes individual / company lobbying then good for southern Australia. For a true democracy politics shouldn’t be able to be bought

7. I can see limiting donations per person, but wouldn’t this give wealthy candidates a huge advantage?

8. Should have publicly funded elections. Every candidate gets the same amount of funds to run their campaign. No donations, in-kind or otherwise. Make it truly a battle of policies instead of pocketbooks.

9. That’s the way to do it. Keep private money out of politics. Private corporations are not there to help people, they’re there for their own pocket. Politics is mainly for by the people for the people.

11. The new law, however, allows “independent” organisations to spend something like $450,000 per election.

    So donations are still doable, you’ll just have a political donor org putting up a bunch of billboards supporting your campaign instead.
    But you won’t get that for the small parties, they really need independent donations to get going.

    It’s probably a good bill in name, but deliberately aimed to destroy smaller parties in practice.

    Especially as the major parties are nosediving in the polls over the last 10 elections or so, with minor parties pickup up more seats all over the country.

14. Federal and all other states and territories should follow suit! It’s been proving repeatedly the lack of transparency around political donations and the influence that it carries.

17. as long as they arent doing this on the side through other venues that are hard to track/regulate, such as memecoins like Trump is doing then this is amazing if true 🙂
