Children can be very cruel, and schools have to show them their boundaries, otherwise things can escalate like in this case. It has to be very clear to the children that there‘s is zero tolerance for any kind of discrimantion and that a violation has actual consequences that can ruin their life.
I‘ve seen an interview with this teacher some time ago and the story is actually heartbraking. The school administration turned a blind eye on when he got attacked with the first homophobe insults. When the other students saw, they could do this without consequences, they joined in and things escalated.
Imagine working at an immigrant school and there are immigrants
