There’s more cyclists than drivers in the city, and cyclists jump red lights a lot more often. It’s great that it’s being policed, but nowhere near enough.
Good that City Police are being tough on this
City cyclists 10 times more likely to jump red lights
Never seen it happen.
At least there is one police force in London that seems to take its job seriously lol
I think the 284 is way smaller then the amount I see as a pedestrian
Ambiguous headline. They have been caught 10x more times than motorists:
“Cyclists in the City of London have been caught 10 times more often than motorists for running red lights this year.
“Since the start of 2025, 284 cyclists in the City of London have been fined for failing to stop at lights, but only 25 motorists were ticketed for the same offence.”
Surprised that the police don’t just video record red light crossings to identify the Lime bike numbers and then demand rider details from Uber to post fines.
Lol what?
Such a badly written article – saying that 284 cyclists were fined but only 25 drivers doesn’t mean 10x higher likelihood.
It could be down to stricter enforcement, more cyclists, etc.
It correctly identifies that riders on Lime bikes are in a hurry because “the clock is ticking”, but then goes on to say that “only 12% or cyclists are in a hurry”- well, Lime bikes are probably fewer than 50% of cycles on the road, so of course that stat isn’t going to be high.
If only the rest of London had enforcement for these aggressive and entitled road users. A ban on cycling throughout London is the only effective and would massively enhance pedestrians daily lives but enforcement would be a good alternative.
City cyclists are scary. I was walking across a crossing in Clapham, had right of way, the cars stopped but the cyclists coming up on the inside of them, who I couldn’t see, didn’t bother to slow down let alone stop. I was a whisker from being knocked down and very shaken by the near miss.
Yesterday I stopped in my car at a red light at a pedestrian crossing and two cyclists just rode on past me ignoring the light entirely.
As drivers we know we can be caught on ANPR and/or video, with fines arriving in the post for driving misdemeanors. Not so the cyclists. This is why, proportionately, I think they’re more likely to jump a red light than drivers are. Hence fines.
And I used to be a city cyclist!
Oh good the daily cyclist thread. This sub is literally nothing without it at this point.
It would be great if the police stood at busy, complex junctions where rude cyclists are actively endangering pedestrians. As opposed to where I usually see them catching cyclists, at long straight stretches of road where the single pedestrian on the street pressed a button and already crossed a minute ago.
I’ve never understood why it’s not enforced properly by the police, you could fund the entirety of the TFL by just having a dedicated force of undercover officers handing out £50 to cyclists who run red lights.
Excellent
At last some good news.
Obviously not fined enough of them.
They need to crack down on Scooters sitting in bicycle boxes. I ride a motorbike and these idiots have no idea how to ride, never look behind them when moving between traffic, sit next to trucks and buses, wear shit or no gear. Cyclists should be fined, scooters are 10x worst.
But I was told this can’t happen until bikes get number plates and cyclists have to have insurance!
It isn’t really surprising – there is far more opportunity to run a light if you can filter.
For car sized vehicles and above you are dependent on the first vehicle jumping a red per lane.
For bikes you can easily have tens reach the ASL in a regular light cycle.
I’d be interested in seeing if vehicles in bike boxes count – most motorbikes and motos will enter the bike box, which is running a red. Have never seen it enforced.
I still really don’t understand why there’s so much of a culture war against people on bikes and why people seem to completely ignore what actually causes significant harm in the capital. I do think enforcement against cyclists at red lights should continue, but I feel like there’s a relative lack of enforcement elsewhere where more harm is caused.
Wake up babe, this mornings cyclist hate post has landed.

I hope they fine all speeding. Over 50% break speed limits, the higher speed the more damage/death: [https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/news/367218/almost-half-uk-drivers-break-speed-limit-and-thats-improvement](https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/news/367218/almost-half-uk-drivers-break-speed-limit-and-thats-improvement)
