The cost of an average data breach in the US is $4.9 million dollars in NTV’s weekly meeting with the Better Business Bureau, Jessie Schmidt, broke down the 2025 Business Scam Study.
“In 2 years, there were 75 thousand reports to the FBI and over 3600 to us at the BBB. So, they are growing rapidly and businesses can protect themselves from most of these scams,” said Schmidt
When hackers gain access to a company’s file or communications systems and pretend to be employees, these internal impersonations can be costly.
The most common scam type businesses encountered last year, according to the Association of Financial Professionals, was business email compromise. With this scam, a perpetrator uses a company’s email system to impersonate executives or other high-ranking employees.
The FBI reported a staggering amount of monetary loss over the last three years, with reports showing $8.4 billion stolen through compromised emails.
Schmidt says the best way to ensure that your company is protected starts within the company.
“Make sure those Spidey senses are firing, and my last tip is training, training and more training,” said Schmidt.
