If you count citizens of Romania becoming utterly uninterested in the Romanian state and mainstream society then yes, there’s a danger and that danger already has manifested itself in its entirety: UDMR politicans are basically Orbans 5th column and care more about what happens in Budapest than what happens in Bucharest. Thanks to the internet they can politically and culturally simply not care at all about what happens in Romania.
No Romanian citizen can be forced to take part in Romanian society. If Orban makes a better offer to certain Romanian citizens by heavy investments into architecture, church institutions, civil society institutions, then Romanian citizens are free to take that offer and live their life in a parallel society, giving free votes and shills to Orban in return. The fundamental rights granted to each citizen by the EU enable and support these life choices, as everyone can live his life as he wants to (within the framework of the law, of course).
Even after three decades of massive emigration and 14 years of EU membership, most Romanians don’t seem to understand this concept freedom as a choice. Nationalists are constantly talking about 19th century “they are stealing our land” narratives and even the most esteemed g4media analyst Dan Tapalaga, in one of his recent articles on this topic, advocates that the UDMR and Transylvanian Hungarian political movements must be punished for their complicity with Orban, instead of trying to understand *why* it happens in the first place.
If you understand freedom as a choice, then solution seems evident: the Romanian state and mainstream society needs to make a better offer than Orban for Transylvanian Hungarians, or actually the Romanian elite needs to make a good offer for the average Romanian in the first place, since turnout at elections is dangerously low, just as trust in politicians and media. So far apparently even Romanians don’t want to be part of what’s happening in Romania, but it’s always easier to talk about “the others”.
