Red alert: Soaring temperatures prompt stay-home warnings across Europe • FRANCE 24 English

as temperatures rise in southern France residents share their coping strategies i take cold showers very often before leaving the house i give my dog a shower and I take a shower and then I move very slowly i can’t take this heat anymore metel France has placed 73 departments on orange alert its second highest level in Paris tourists are braving the heat to sightsee they’re trying to keep cool by staying hydrated and using fans and umbrellas to shield the sun you have to adapt dress lightly moisturize and protect yourself across Europe it’s a similar story high temperatures making everyone hot and miserable italy has placed 17 cities on red alert including the top tourist destinations of Naples Milan and Rome people waiting in line to visit the coliseum were misted with water spray fan units while others took advantage of the fountains across the city to cool off it’s very very hot so of course you look for shady spots luckily Rome has no shortage of fountains a nice fresh ice cream or gelato with small breaks you do your best to visit the city in southwestern Spain seville is baking with temperatures that are expected to hit 43° C it’s very hot very hot i sweat all day but I drink a lot of water 2 to three liters a day those that live along the coast are taking advantage of the local beaches but for residents of Madrid that’s not an option well honestly since we’re in Madrid and there’s no sea and barely any pools I’m not handling it too well mainly because you sweat so much officials are urging people to drink plenty of liquids and stay indoors during the hottest periods of the day

Authorities across Southern Europe urged people to seek shelter Sunday and protect the most vulnerable as punishing temperatures from Spain to Portugal, Italy and France climbed higher in the summer’s first major heatwave. Ambulances stood on standby near tourist hotspots and regions issued fire warnings as experts warned that such heatwaves, intensified by climate change, would become more frequent.

  1. It’s the height of summer for gods sake, normal temperatures for these places. It’s grey and humid here in Cornwall uk, again normal 😂

  2. Close your windows and drapes in the morning before it gets hot. Open your windows when the sun goes down and it cools off, let the cool air in…if you don't have a/c put a fan in the open window at night. Rince and Repeat.

  3. You did this to yourselves with relentless greedy consumption giving scant thought to the long term environmental consequences, now you will all suffer it…!

  4. Temperatures in the low 40s C. are common for the lower elevation interior of southern Spain in early Summer. I've been keeping track of European temps since the early '90s. On the other hand, France, for some reason, seems to be getting relatively hotter (not by absolute temperature but going by seasonal norms respective for those regions) than Southern Spain…

  5. The only thing to warn against is the leftist narrative. The temperatures have been the same for 70 years, but now the outcry is louder every year.

  6. I’m on holiday in south France. Picked June to avoid bad heat. It’s 12 degrees over the highest temperature for here. You can’t move. We drove by a fire. There hasn’t been a drop of water in the entire month of June. I’m Irish so this is like living on the sun. It’s really scary.

  7. Mammals excel at dealing with the cold but not so well with heat. We are warming the planet and oh dear….we are mammals.

  8. City centres in Europe are basically just one huge microwaves.

Look at the cities. Heat radiation coming from above travels straight down to hit concrete pavement and sidewalks. No soft soils and tree shades in sight.

  9. Fans are worthless in this sort of heat, even when the humidity is comparatively low. All fans do are blow around hot, stale air.

Prepare yourselves for a repeat of overwhelming numbers of heat-related exhaustion, strokes and deaths.

Hot weather like this requires air conditioning and remaining indoors, especially during peak afternoon hours. Do not think that you can cope with such heat despite being young and healthy. You must adjust your activities and curtail time spent outdoors.

  10. Thanks, Captain Obvious. I'll stay indoors and run my AC. By the way, it was the same temperature here in Minnesota a couple weeks ago. Nobody panicked. 😆
