From the darkness, Portugal were faced with an impossible task: to bring some light into the world after the heartbreaking tragedy of losing one of their own. The death of Diogo Jota, killed in a car crash with his brother Andre Silva in the early hours of Thursday morning, had shaken the Portugal team when they woke up on the morning of their opening match of Euro 2025 against Spain. Afterwards, a 5-0 defeat to the world champions barely scratches the surface in the face of such a loss.

There was a lovely, sombre moment right at the end where the Portugal players went to the fans behind the goal and received a banner from them.
“Thank you for everything Diogo Jota”, it read. A lovely way for Portugal to end an emotional day, with today’s news very much hanging over this evening’s match.

Spain striker Esther Gonzalez scored twice in the first half as her side powered to a 5-0 win over Portugal that was overshadowed by the deaths of Portugal international Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva in a car accident earlier on Thursday.
On an emotional night that began with a minute’s silence for the brothers, the Portuguese team shipped the first of four first-half goals in the second minute, with Gonzalez scoring twice for the reigning world and Nations League champions, and Vicky Gonzalez and Alexia Putellas adding the other two.
Portugal showed more composure in the second half but they were no match for Spain’s power, precision and technique and, though they held Spain at bay for most of the second half, Cristina Martin-Prieto scored with a superb late header to complete the rout.

Before kick-off there was a beautifully observed moment of silence in Bern, which was broken by ripples of applause that turn into a poignant gesture of appreciation by the crowd. A black and white picture of Diogo Jota was on display at both ends of the ground. The Portugal fans chant Jota’s name as the match began, with fans holding up letters spelling out “Rest in peace, Diogo Jota” in Portuguese.

A difficult half on a dark day for Portugal, but Spain have been very professional. The world champions have raised the bar at Euro 2025 and there are very few teams, perhaps none, who are probably capable of matching it f they play like this in all six games. There’s been the usual dominance and control but also danger and so much threat.
