The Moldova – European Union Summit, which is taking place today in Chisinau, marks a new stage in the country’s European journey. The event institutionalizes the strategic relationship between Chisinau and Brussels, while at the same time paving the way for the actual start of accession negotiations. This is the opinion of political commentator Ion Tabarta.

“The summit institutionalizes a new stage in the relationship between the Republic of Moldova and the European Union, namely the transition to the actual negotiation phase,” Ion Tabarta mentioned for IPN.

In his opinion, the unfolding of the summit confirms that the Republic of Moldova is on the “right path” and that Brussels is open to advancing in its relationship with Chisinau.

Additionally, the political commentator draws attention to the internal political risks that could affect the course of European integration. “If the parliamentary majority changes on September 28 and we do not have a pro-European government, the pace of this direction will slow down or stop, and this will bring about dramatic changes for the Republic of Moldova”, the analyst noted.

According to Ion Tabarta, for success in negotiations with the EU, the Republic of Moldova needs three basic conditions. It’s about the pro-European political will of the government in Chisinau, people prepared to implement technical reforms, and financial resources. And in terms of financial resources, Moldova has the full support of the EU.

Asked whether the President of Romania, Nicusor Dan, and the President of Ukraine, Volodimir Zelenskyy, could participate in today’s summit, the analyst does not rule this out. “Considering that both states are close to the Republic of Moldova, the presence of the two leaders could be possible. It is not excluded that their participation might have been agreed upon, but it was not announced for certain reasons, including security”, the commentator mentioned.

The first bilateral summit between Moldova and the European Union is taking place this evening at the State Residence in Chisinau. According to the announcement made by the Presidency, the President of the European Council, António Costa, and the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, are expected to attend the event.
