Tim van Haandel, Mulder Onions:
The prosperous sales of New Zealand onions in Europe have stalled in recent weeks. “Until the second week of June, sales were going satisfactorily. Unfortunately, after that, several boats were delayed while the market was short in mid-June,” says Tim van Haandel of Mulder Onions.
“All that product arrived in week 26. Unfortunately, this meant we missed two strong export weeks, and now importers are stuck with oversized stocks, which previously were easy to sell. That has now become much more difficult,” Tim says. “It’s a shame, because 80% of the season went well, only the final 20% is proving disappointing. Fortunately, demand and prices were strong during the earlier part. We could have pushed prices even higher, as at one point Dutch onions were priced on par with New Zealand ones, so I’m convinced there was more potential.”
Meanwhile, Mulder Onions has been working with Dutch onion sets for two weeks. “There was an attempt to maintain the mood of the old crop, so we started with prices that were too high. Currently, prices for small sets are between 38-40 cents, medium sets are 42-45 cents, large sets are around 48 cents, and extra-large sets are about 58 cents. More products are gradually coming onto the market, so I don’t expect prices to stabilise anytime soon. There is some demand from regular destinations like England and the Caribbean, and an occasional lost container ends up in Africa, but it’s far from enough to keep everyone busy.”
“The yields of onion sets are lower than initially expected due to the drought,” the exporter notes. “It’s still far too early to say what the yields of seed onions will be.” The potato market, in any case, looks less promising. “Prices dropped significantly from February onwards. And with the arrival of the first new potatoes, it’s a very tricky situation,” Tim concludes.
