Prince William and Kate Middleton continue to break traditional royal protocol, paving the way for their future reign as the King and Queen of England. However, the financial moves they are making are proving that they are already keeping their behind-the-palace-walls life in mind.
In the couple’s latest financial report, the Prince of Wales, who is also in charge of the Duchy of Cornwall estate, is keeping some money matters close to the vest, per Express. Instead of being fully transparent like his father, King Charles III, was when he held the same title, William chose to keep the amount of taxes he paid and a salary breakdown of household staff private.

William and Kate employ 68 staffers, who assist them inside and outside the palace for their professional appearances and with their three children, Prince George, 11, Princess Charlotte, 10, and Prince Louis, 7. The U.K. media outlet is noting that the new decision is to be less forthcoming about some of his financial statements to keep the family’s privacy a top priority.

The staff works out of Kensington Palace in London, away from the four-bedroom Adelaide Cottage on the Windsor Castle grounds. In the wake of Kate’s 2024 cancer diagnosis, their 2022 move to a smaller home was the right one for William and his family. It kept a tight circle around the Princess of Wales while she was undergoing treatment, and as she heals from a mentally and physically taxing year.
Kate was honest about the aftermath of her cancer battle at a July 2 visit to the Colchester Hospital in Essex.
“You put on a sort of brave face, stoicism through treatment. Treatment’s done, then it’s like, ‘I can crack on, get back to normal,’ but actually, the phase afterwards is really, really difficult,” she frankly admitted, per People. “You’re not necessarily under the clinical team any longer, but you’re not able to function normally at home as you perhaps once used to, and actually, someone to help talk you through that, show you and guide you through that sort of phase that comes after treatment, I think is really valuable.”
William’s financial moves appear to be a way to put a wall of protection around his family, and most importantly, Kate, during a crucial time in her recovery. That strategy will likely carry forward once they take the throne, marking a significant shift in palace protocol.
