  1. I hope there were enough to be described as huddled masses.

  2. Canada is pretty cool too! It’s an option!

This going to be great. It’s like a sale on smart people.

  3. Hmmmm where else do I recall hearing about scientists escaping first. Ah whatever probably not important.

  4. That’s probably the first thing that european governments actually like about the Trump administration. Such a massive brain drain will cause many start ups and research advances being made in Europe instead of the US now. A win for Europe.

  5. Brain drain, the first scientists in American brain drain have arrived in France. Call it what it is.

  6. Why can’t they prioritise luring back French scientists who moved to the US because the funding and job stability situation in France (and most of Europe in general) were so dire?

Source: British scientist who briefly worked in France and now works in the US

  7. My research organization is already planning to move everyone to the EU due to exposure to funding risk (and personal risk for minorities and expats) in the US.

It’s sad that we have to waste a lot of money planning for contingencies like this.

  8. How do you get a job in France? Seriously. I have 30 years experience in IT and can’t find a decent job here. The age discrimination has gotten really bad here.

  9. This will be the longest term impact of the Trump years. The US will no longer be the destination of the best and brightest, so innovation will shift.

  10. Going to work elsewhere “out of fear of budget cuts” doesn’t make you a refuge.

  11. This has been building up for years. In software development, the EU already has an edge in some corners. In particular, formal verification for software is so EU dominated a lot of the conferences in the topic you’ll hear more French than English.

I don’t think the American public understands how devastating this will be. MIT was modeled after the Ecole des Mines in France, and it’s only a matter of time before the Ecole retakes the foremost position on the planet.

  12. Just a reminder, America got the atomic bomb before everyone else, because they scooped up the brilliant scientists fleeing Germany.

  13. Software dev here, I am also attempting to move to France. The brain drain is in progress.

  14. Are the rocket engineers returning to Germany? Nature is healing…

  15. I’m leaving next month for Scotland! Brain drain, brain drain, brain drain, brain drain!

  16. Any tech, computer and medical leaving the USA for Europe? We’d need it in my country.

  17. While I appreciate the general notion, this is peanuts as the differences between the US and EU are of magnitudes of billions, a few millions aint gonna change much, the US still is a major attraction with the wealthiest institutions.
