  1. It’s sadly more nuanced than that. I don’t think our leadership is the slightest bit interested in a scenario that destabilizes Russia as a state, which an outright loss would certainly do.

    There are several reasons for this. First, Russia (for all of it’s faults) is a stable country with a proven track record of restraint where the use of nuclear weapons are concerned. Nobody wants to see it break off into a bunch of impoverished, nuclear-armed shitholes.

    Second, any disruptions in the flow of Russian hydrocarbons onto the world market would most likely spark a global depression. There’s a reason sanctions enforcement has been indifferent at best.

    Third, the most likely outcome of a dissolved or radically destabilized Russia would be that China would come out the other side as the de facto rulers of Asia, including control of the above-mentioned hydrocarbon assets. This would be a horrible outcome. I think we can all agree, however reluctantly, that China is a much more dangerous foe at this moment in history than is Russia.

    Due to all these factors, I think this is playing out exactly the way our leadership, including the Biden administration, planned it. Ukraine will continue to exist. It will never be allowed to join NATO, and most likely not the EU. Russia will get most or all of the Donbas, and go back to being a gas station for richer countries, but with a radically weakened armed force.

    It’s shitty… but it makes all the strategic sense in the world.

  3. The democratic and low corruption world of citizen government badly needs Europe to take the lead globally in this struggle. The USA is obviously internationally inept/compromised for the next decade at least

  4. As a lay person what I see, Putin must be stopped. This cannot continue. It is imperative that Ukraine remain Ukraine. 100%. We need to as in USA needs to contribute to The conflict in Ukraine, God bless Ukraine.
