Will Jordan, who was named a top 10 rugby player in the world this month by FloRugby, scored two tries and had a third try reversed late in the second half as New Zealand avoided a season-opening loss against France in Dunedin, New Zealand, 33-27.

France had an opportunity to win in the final minutes, but the All Blacks defense held firm and picked up the win.

Two All Black tries were wiped off the board by TMO officials, including what would have been a hat trick try for Jordan, who is now nine tries away from tying the record held by Doug Howlett. A penalty kick with seven minutes left in the game by Beaudin Barrett, who was near perfect on July 5, were the deciding points.

The All Blacks get the job done against a very impressive showing from a young France Rugby team in Dunedin! 🇳🇿🇫🇷

Jordan was named to the FloRugby Top 100’s top 10 players along with teammate Ardie Savea, the No. 1 player in the world. But despite the star power in the lineup, the French team often pushed the All Blacks to the brink. Despite not bringing its biggest stars to New Zealand, the French side showed that the three-match series may not be the easy set New Zealand fans and pundits expected.

The two squads will meet again on July 12 and July 19. All the matches are streaming on FloRugby in the United States.

Jordie Barrett Got Better While Playing For Leinster Rugby

All Black teammate Billy Proctor told the team’s website that superstar Jordie Barrett’s time in Dublin this past club season was well worth it. Proctor played with Barrett on the Hurricanes, where Barrett will return to in the next club season, and said he noticed changes in the star.

“Leinster’s line speed is pretty intense, so he’s willing to bring that down here,” Proctor told the All Blacks website. “I’m getting used to that, and we’ll be on the same page.

“There is a responsibility to go out there and perform, considering how many midfielders there are and getting the first crack at it. However, there is support from the rest of our midfielders, who have been doing everything to help us and set Jordie, me, and Quinn [Tupaea] up to get the job done.”

Barrett helped Leinster Rugby win its first United Rugby Championship title in June.

— All Blacks (@AllBlacks) July 4, 2025Why Ardie Savea Is The Best Rugby Player In The World In 2025

For nearly a year– since the first list published in 2024— FloRugby writer Philip Bendon painstakingly poured over the tape to compile the top players throughout the globe.

And at the end of the day, he couldn’t put anyone ahead of New Zealand All Blacks star Ardie Savea, the 2023 World Rugby Player of the Year who begins his international season on July 5 against France.

“As ever when selecting a player list, a level of subjectivity factors in,” Bendon said. “Now thirteen years into his professional career, Ardie Savea is at a level of influence on a par with the great Richie McCaw.”
